🧵Kemi Badenoch's comments that people earning over £100,000 a year are somehow “punished” for working harder is deeply troubling when discussing free childcare provision. It risks implying that higher earners work harder than people on much lower salaries, many of whom work incredibly

Today I'm reading extracts from the memoirs of Detective Archie Carmichael, who served in the City of Glasgow Police from 1859 to 1900. A skilled investigator, his fascinating casebook demonstrates the detective strategies of the time, as well as offering a glimpse of Victorian Glasgow.

Shingles got me down, but this new leather jacket lifted my spirits. Ignore the dirty pinned-up hair...it's been a rough few days 😂 I'm anxious about the release of SLEUTH-HOUND next month. Preorders build momentum heading into a launch. I'd hugely appreciate your support: linktr.ee/drlindseyfit...

*Lifeboat pulls up to someone struggling desperately in the water and asks to see a passport. When they can’t produce one the lifeboat just watches them drown.* Is that REALLY the sort of world you want to live in? The RNLI are the Red Cross of the sea, they help everyone. Thank you so much to them.

Let's see what the team are reading this week! Pedro is back and working is way through "Mrs Dalloway". It's set over the course of one day as the titular character readies her house for a party and lets her mind wander. - Michael

Just catching up. I'm sorry, but there's no f*cking way that what happened in #Dover was 'spontaneous'. We also know *exactly* who they are - they said so in the live feeds from the various 'citizen journalists' covering it. 1/4

900+ academics and others have so far defended this man on grounds of academic freedom. That’s how easy it was for them to support a openly racist man. They didn’t even bother to double check whether the racist happens to also be against academic freedom. Total surprise, he is.

This is one thing that gets lost in all the talk about HE funding. Although academics are professionals and there is professional support staff in HE, the level of support they get for the work is orders of magnitude LESS than equivalent professionals in other sectors.

As @brandyzadrozny.bsky.social reports, RFK Jr. falsely stated the “cure for measles is chicken soup and vitamin A” while visiting Lancaster County — the same PA county where 2 unvaccinated people just became the first deaths of the year from measles — in 2021.
ms.now
RFK Jr. praised Lancaster County’s low vaccine rate in 2021. Now, 2 people are dead from measles.
There have been 393 confirmed cases of measles in Pennsylvania this year and 70 people have been hospitalized from the viral disease.

I see news has emerged today of ANOTHER crash with a vehicle driving the wrong way - on August 21st. That’s the 4th in the last couple of weeks, all leaving innocent victims dead or injured. If these thugs want a real challenge, drive into a tree - don’t risk innocent lives.

Embellished tiger standing on elephant. Carved in sandstone, 11th/12th century AD. Possibly Vietnamese. Glazed terracotta tiles with reliefs. Probably from a temple in Myanmar. #Bexhill
The tiger is very stylised and standing on two legs on the back of the much smaller but accurate elephant. It is pale grey in colour. The two large tiles are laying flat and are dark grey in colour. There are figures on them in relief. In the front one there is a tool like an axe. They have decorative patterned borders.

According to the BBC the Tories have selected a ‘former’ neo-Nazi to stand in the local election. He served three years in prison for anti-Semitic related offences then came out and was convicted again a year later for more anti-Semitic harassment. He should NOT be eligible to stand for election! 😡

This pup found a stick shaped like an old timey pipe earlier today and has already solved three mysteries. 13/10
a brown wire-haired pup stands on a wooden deck in a grassy yard. he looks at us with golden eyes and his right ear flipped inside out. he has a pipe-shaped stick in his mouth, giving him the appearance of a sophisticated and dapper gentleman. just give him a deerstalker cap and a cloak, and he'd give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.
