I’m excited to share that The Scarcity Loop: How School Choice Reshapes the Rationing of Public Education is officially out in the world. It seemed important to find a slice.

🧵 Let's talk about the backstory here, which you can also read about in my book. Bergtraum was 1 of 8 new selective citywide career-themed HS opened between 1969-82. 8 new schools doesn't sound like a lot, but at the time, there were 86 HS in NYC & new schs recruited from the whole city. 1/12

The NYC ban on "A.i." for 2K-8 is great, but we have to pay VERY CLOSE attention to the "A.i." tech the city will be pushing on high schoolers in these "pilot" programs. I have big questions about ALL of them. www.nyc.gov/mayors-offic...
Screenshot reading:

Pilot programs include:

Quill: Accessed by English language arts classrooms, Quill is designed to support close reading, text analysis and the use of evidence to support claims. Students will use Quill for no more than 15 minutes per week.
Edia: Accessed by math classrooms, Edia is designed to provide step-by-step coaching and prompt students to explain their reasoning. Students will use Edia for no more than 20 minutes per week.
Brisk Teaching: Accessed through teacher-created activities, Brisk Teaching is designed to provide guided practice using teacher-selected texts or videos, with objectives and guardrails set by the teacher. Students will use Brisk Boost for 10 to 20 minutes once or twice per week.
Playlab: To be used across multiple subjects, Playlab is designed to help students engage with assignment-specific applications and examine AI outputs for bias and reasoning. No more than two assignments per marking period will use Playlab.
Intel AI-Ready Schools: To be used across multiple subjects, Intel AI-Ready Schools is designed to help students identify community problems and develop AI solutions through semester-long projects. Students will use the tool for one period per week.

I’m a little tired of people doing mediocre work at the service of kids and not looking at education policies through a racial equity lens or think of nuance. Instead of unpacking the data, it is manipulated to present a false narrative that fits bad practices and harms kids. Just stop.

Tapping the sign for a thousandth time—when you effectively make the SAT the primary criteria for admissions, you are ensuring that your college will enroll hardly any working or middle class students, even ones with 90th percentile standardized test scores
A table showing SAT/ACT scores by income band. Wealthy children are far more likely to score at 1500/34+ than poor/working/middle class children; in fact 0.0% of children from the bottom two household-income deciles score that high.
