A slide from one of my talks on regional climate change... Our planet's climate today is fundamentally different globally from the heat extremes of the Dust Bowl era.
Two maps side-by-side (July 1936 and July 2025) for surface temperature anomalies. It is much warmer globally in 2025 than 1936, which is more isolated for the heat extreme over the central U.S. during the Dust Bowl.

This! Take a look at the dewpoint, which is the measure of moisture in the atmosphere. 60s = you can feel the thickness in the air 70s = tropical 79 in New Jersey is gross, pushing the feels like temperature 20 degrees higher! Note: this is not an official reading. #ItsAllAboutTheDewpoint

#Arctic sea ice in the Barents Sea is a record low for this time of year and potentially on its way to the earliest melt-out on record for the summer season. There is an area with sharply declining ice cover for long-term trends too. Map of the the region: zacklabe.com/arctic-clima...

Our oceans are extremely warm compared to the historical record. One of those areas of record high temperatures last month was across the North Pacific. Graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every May from 1854-2026 using NOAA ERSSTv5 data (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...). 🌊
Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each May from 1854 through 2026 for only the midlatitude region of the North Pacific Ocean. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. 2026 is a record high.
