A while ago I got asked by a newspaper writer to comment on the weirdness of Steve Ditko's artwork. He used pretty much none of my response... but I posted it on my blog. Check it out, Ditko heads! #Ditko #Comics www.benzilla.com/?p=8080

Why is Steve Ditko’s Art so Weird-Looking?
I recently received an inquiry from a writer at the Daily Telegraph, asking me a few questions about Steve Ditko’s art style for an article he was working on–presumably to coincide with…

You really can't do a comic that takes place in the 90's unless you feature at least one character w the ridiculous then-trend of wearing shorts over long-johns.

Someone on Reddit put together this WHA 2016 to 2026 character style changes comparison. I see ppl occasionally *complaining* about this. I'm like, fool, I'd be lucky if I got this little "character design drift" in a single one of my ~100ish pg books!

A panel that was key to John Byrne's success is this horizontal, diagrammatic panel establishing character position & relationships to each other, allowing for movement and text, and not taking up much space. He must have done this a hundred times. Keeps a story clear & running like a clock.

Dayummm that Far Side original sold for $112K. That's a crazy price for a single-panel gag strip. Assuming it's because you pretty much never see a Far Side original in the wild (this is the first one I've seen on the auction block for sure).

Case in point: Ditko agreed to have a comic published by Fantagraphics. When it came out, Gary Groth printed these two incredibly snarky pages at the back. Can you believe it? Steve Ditko actually *declined* to be interviewed by The Comics Journal! What arrogance! There was no second issue.
A 300-Page Interview with
Steve Ditko in the next issue of…
THE
COMICS JOURNAL
(Nah, not really!)
In fact, Steve Ditko declines to be interviewed anywhere, at any time, in any place, so we’ve done the next best thing: we at the Comics Journal initiated a policy in which all interview subjects are required to talk about Ditko — regardless of relevance or even interest or knowledge on the part of the interview subject! A few salacious excerpts from previous interviews:
SETH (from Comics Journal #193):
You think of someone like Ditko, even within the
structure of something like Spider-Man, you can feel
his efforts to get that Randian stuff out; but, I suppose
being hampered by the company, it’s still like a game
they’re playing; they have to squeeze in what they can
within the parameters of what’s allowed.
point of view, and there was absolutely no qualifying.
or compromising or in any way getting him to step
back or accommodate anything that would qualify his
point of view.
GROTH: Had Ditko been brainwashed by Rand by
that time?
GROTH: Of course, Ditko is an interesting example…
I probably prefer his Spider-Man or Dr. Strange to his[The
didactically repetitious Randian tracts. [laughs]
SETH: Yeah, I’ll agree! They’re certainly more fun to read. You’ve got to wonder, though, if that has to do with a growing ideology in him or a growing sledge‑hammer approach. If he’d been allowed to do what he wanted, would he have been doing that from Day One? I’m not sure if he had been doing Mr. A at the same age that he was doing Spider‑Man, if it might not have been a bit more readable. It's obvious that he
really had his own approach to comics. Both the
drawing and the writing.
KANE: I would assume. This was during the '60s
and she had come out during the '40s. Even the movie
Fountainhead] came out during the late '40s.
He was always a loner. I think his ideas could have
been almost anything, simply because he self-coun-
seled himself. As far as I know, I’ve seen him at a coupl…If you think that we only publish interviews that make reference to Ditko, think again. Each issue also features:
•
Reviews of comics Ditko may have heard of;
•
•
Aesthetic criticism that may infuriate Ditko;
Biting commentary on the profession that probably leaves
Ditko shaking his head in disgust or bewilderment.
