Hey folks, this hasn’t gotten much attention, but remember those proposed OMB rule changes we all commented on recently? There’s a new attempt to sneak them just for NSF. We have three days to comment. Please don’t sleep on this!

I've seen a few people in tech-ier spaces celebrating the X-Labs thing on LinkedIn, and I just want to be abundantly clear about something: it's been very obvious from the start that this is part of the malicious capture of NSF, and if you're still excited about it after this news, you can fuck off

in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an
"Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.

New grad students often adopt a stance of hypercriticism as a shortcut to seeming savvy. When I was one, Nick Salvatore told us he didn't like "shit-on-the-book seminars" so we would instead spend our time talking about what *worked* in various texts to see what we could learn from other authors.

We’ve got 8 months to prove that what actually matters isn’t ‘centrist v progressive’ but ‘effective fighter vs weak capitulator.’ Hell, the last year has proven it. Speak to your constituents’ concerns and champion the positions that they care about. Rinse and repeat. Win in November.

It is over a pixellated field of green, which is over a screenshot of Pokopia, a 3D town in isometric. Many of us need to keep writing federal grants (both for political reasons and as a Hail Mary to keep people employed) despite the feeling it's a waste of time, so... if you got an NSF or NIH grant funded this year, would you mind bragging about it in the replies, so it feels like the odds are >0%?
