You read ONE Homeric epic and suddenly your charts’ axes are forever skewed.
A scatterplot of books read, with read date (2023–2027) on the x-axis and original publication date (-950–2080) on the y-axis. The vast majority of the books are roughly in the 1900s and 2000s. One point, published in -750, has clearly skewed the chart’s axes, making all books published in the last century incredibly difficult to discern in any more detail.

While this absolutely sucks, we are going to see a lot more places implementing universal global age verification over this next year, because the number of states and countries legally requiring it has gotten to the point no one can keep up anymore.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.

I think this is a common kind of scammy rhetorical construction that makes people mad, because it sets up a world in which the thing cannot fail, it can only be failed. I actually associate this most with diets, but it also appears a lot for Agile.

when im captioning someone's words, i caption all of their words, aside from most speech disfluencies such as uhs and ums. for example, i dont change "gonna" to "going to" or whatever else to "fix" their speech. it's racist, ableist, and classist to do so. i side-eye captioners who do that.

Using images with alt text to show code is not very helpful. • A typical user would need to know about the alt text to copy it. • A low-vis user cannot scale it, and it won’t honor text prefs. • A blind user has to parse a wall of text they cannot pause. Paste code. Maybe a URL to longer code.

This is one of the biggest impacts of a protest. Seeing actual physical proof in front of your eyes that other people do not want this, and getting out of "silence = complicity" by being loud together. It's a lot easier to fight when you know you won't be alone against a powerful foe.

This is exactly what I mean when I say that it is impossible to reduce friction, only to move it around. The text-making-up machine dropped the friction of "research" to zero, but every single person downstream of that "research" who has to act upon it now shoulders a double workload.
