In 2019 I got to meet some of my heroes in web dev at a conference, all women with big social presence. Not even a few years later, none of them have any public profile and a few have left the industry entirely. I'm the only one left from that small group. 🥲

This whole situation just makes me so sad. There are so few publications left that are reliably producing genuine, non-slop web content. I think I can count them on one hand. Contrast this to the smörgåsbord on offer in, say, 2015. Tragic. Lets be loud about this and keep CSS-Tricks kicking!

This always bothered me about Sailor Moon
A chart of the solar system.

The top label divides the "inner planets" (mercury, venus, earth + moon, mars) and "outer planets" (jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune)

The bottom label marks planets "known since antiquity (named after elements/days of week in Japanese)" (mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn)

The middle label divides the Inner Senshi (mercury, venus, moon, mars, jupiter) from the Outer Senshi (saturn, uranus, neptune, pluto which is not a planet)

I am building a website, for work. It feels like a radical act these days. I am not using an LLM, I am coding with my own hands, wading through documentation, tinkering, reverse engineering, console logging my way to understanding. Learning new skills, refusing to hand them off to an unthinking machine.

I just encountered the worst credit card form. They 'helpfully' split up the card number field into 4 inputs, which breaks all autofill, and then if you made a typo in one of the inputs, you had to basically race the browser to click into the field to delete its contents before the debounce timer

A generation of managers made a career out of copying ideas from other apps they've seen into their own app. Today, AI (which has seen every app) can do this a hundred times faster than any of them. The only problem is that doing this was always pointless.

Thoughtless features never add up to a thoughtful product
Your first idea for how to solve a problem is most likely to be a low-impact hack. Delightful user experiences require a higher level of thinking.

Designers talk a big game about "empathy" for users. But empathy without respect is nothing more than pity. As Big Tech goes all-in on AI to accelerate its feature pipelines, the disrespect for users that's baked into these systems naturally scales up with it. Now it has reached the breaking point.
productpicnic.beehiiv.com
Empathy and delight mean nothing when the software is disrespectful
Software is now something we do TO users, instead of something that we make FOR them.
