In the period immediately following the Civil War, Black men held office. Schools were built. Wealth was accumulated. It was called Reconstruction. White Americans dismantled it. They retaliated not because Reconstruction failed, but because it was working. That pattern is repeating today.

Put another way—academic departments diversified at the same time as the pie shrank. This put women and minorities in the captain’s chair of a sinking ship. Convenient targets when, of course, those responsible for the crisis were largely white men with tenure who got their jobs in boom times.

That’s how voter suppression has often worked in America. The rules are presented as race-neutral, while the effect is to diminish Black political power.

I only have a few words at this moment, mainly deep disappointment. The demolition of the Voting Rights Act is not simply a change in election law. It is a shift in who can effectively shape the future. It's a shift in America short lived democracy.

Kansas tried to require proof of citizenship in 2013: The result was that 30 cases of undocumented voters were prevented- but 31,000 legitimate citizens were prevented from voting. This is why the SAVE act is harmful. Should You Need to Prove Citizenship to Vote? www.nytimes.com/2026/03/24/u...

One of the greatest deceptions of our time is that we should be more concerned about immigrants possibly being criminals than we are about those in the highest positions of power, who wear crosses, quote scripture, while actually just using Christianity as a tool to perpetrate injustice.

The story isn’t necessarily that Democrat Taylor Rehmet won a Texas election in a district Trump won by 17 points Or that Rehmet was outspent 20-to-1 Or even that his opponent was backed by Trump and Greg Abbott It’s that 57% of the voters were REPUBLICANS And Rehmet STILL WON by 12 points

Immigrants used to be able to vote and had other rights. Those racially eligible for citizenship. Basically, mainly white immigrants. Hiroshi Motomura's book details this history. I first learned of this from Charles Barron's campaign for NYC immigrant voting rights. global.oup.com/academic/pro...

An experimental finding sure to shock: white evangelicals are especially attuned to slights against Christians, but significantly less likely to view same actions as discriminatory when against a religious out-group. And this double-standard is unique to white evangelicals. doi.org/10.1111/jssr...

The fact that ICE has now murdered multiple white American citizens in #Minneapolis is unveiling that the same racialized state violence built to target Black & Brown people spills over to white people resisting the status quo. Black people have lived this our entire time in this land. #LinkArms

God is clear about the sins of kidnapping (man-stealing), murder, and bearing false witness. God is clear about his care for foreigners, neighbors, the poor, and those on the margins. Righteousness, justice, mercy, and love for neighbor are not conditional standards for Jesus' followers.

Statistically speaking, you are more likely to die at the hands of law enforcement officers than undocumented immigrants.
And it's not particularly close.

Random internet dweeb:
That's because there are more people willing to break the law dumba:;. Which includes all of those illegal immigrants.
What you are not more likely to experience is violent assault, rape, fraud, destruction of your society. As illegal immigrants will win that race everyday if allowed to.

Trey Ferguson @PastorTrey05
Wow, so what you're saying is that there are WAY more undocumented immigrants available to kill us, but that law enforcement officers are STILL lapping them?
CRAZY!

Ben Luhmann, who filmed this, is one of the two high schoolers from a conservative Christian family I rode along with in Chicago when they were searching for ICE agents there. When I asked him how his faith informed his efforts to document ICE/DHS, he told me this. religionnews.com/2025/11/25/h...
"But also I feel like Christians should be the first people to fight for this," Ben interjected, as Sam nodded. "What have we been taught our entire life? Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked.
This is basic, basic stuff. Christians have always been people who are supposed to be there for the marginalized, the people that are being hurt by systems, the people that don't have a voice."

To defend the societal domination in which it was birthed and to which it remains bound, white churches have always been quick to abandon moral obligations for legal technicalities. It'd be foolish to expect anything different today.

I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

Man, Du Bois had some bangers, but for me, it doesn't get much better than his scathing indictment of the "Christianity" of the United States. Certainly this was all true of the nation in his lifetime. But in my lifetime, his criticisms have never felt so true of the nation right now.
