Train your model on a task, or fit it to biological data? And once it's optimized, what does it tell us about the brain? 🧠 In our #BernsteinConference satellite workshop, we'll discuss these questions through the lenses of different optimization methods. Check it out in Room 3.104! 🤓😉

Agreed, and for farming "enabling dense population" is also not a dating argument. Rather a causality one.

Guillaume Bellec @bellecguill.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
True that. Yet, it would be lazy to accept loops has no substructure: The egg was first (evolutionarily there were eggs before chickens). Another example: food farming versus dense populations. Both amplified each other. But: we accept farming enabled dense sedentary civilization.

How can the brain learn the hidden hierarchical structure from high dimensional data? In our latest work, we use synthetic datasets to analyze two classes of bio-plausible learning rules: variants of Direct Feedback Alignment, and local self-supervised learning. We find only the latter succeeds.

Prestige bias is a major problem in academia: success in academia leads to other unfair advantages. Prestige bias is bigger in fields that are less scientific (eg., art, history). Fields where claims are more testable have lower prestige markers (eg math, physics). kurtishingl.com/files/PTTS_l...

I don't think our culture is ready for accepting this idea, and probably some percentage of humans never will be. My guess: hundreds of years from now a majority will agree with this, but many still won't, and it will correlate with religion and education. (See, e.g., Darwinian evolution) 🧠📈 🧪
