Paris, the capital of France, has recorded more days above 40°C this week than during the 147-year period spanning from 1872 to 2019. Historic is an understatement.

I promised myself I would actually have a first author systematic review out by my fourth (!) @eshackathon.bsky.social - so it is fitting that on today, the first day of #ESH-Norge (hosted by @drmattg.bsky.social) our preprint it published. 🎉💻 (8/n).

This is important because of the intensification of beef production globally (e.g. spread of feedlots in Latin America), presenting a risk to global health (e.g. via the food chain). These systems are associated with higher antibiotic use for therapy, prophylaxis, and growth promotion (6/n).

The end result is we think the most extensive systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic to date, which should motivate further regulation of antibiotics in the beef industry and improvements to future primary research in this and related areas (e.g. trials of antibiotic alternatives). (5/n)

We also encountered these difficulties, but used rigorous and innovative systematic review and meta-analysis methods to help cut through them. This enables us not only to identify these effects, but also characterise their uncertainty more acutely (4/n). [sorry GIF choice is limited here]

Moreover, we present evidence that these effects are moderated by time - increasing with the number of days of continuous antibiotic administration, and decreasing with the number of days since cessation of antibiotic administration ⏱️📈📉. (2/n).
