Tropical Storm Polo has formed in eastern tropical Pacific. Conditions are very favorable for strengthening due to record-warm ocean temperatures & low wind shear, and Polo may threaten some portion of western coast of Mexico/Baja as a major (Cat 3+) storm in coming days.

Map from polarwx.com showing the "superensemble" of potential trajectories for Polo from all major global models, superimposed atop a sea surface temperature anomaly map. Each black line is a separate simulated trajectory, and each colored line is the ensemble average for a specific model.

Map of ocean surface temperature anomalies across the Northeastern Pacific Ocean. The ocean is *extremely* warm--far above average, and in most cases record warm--along the entire simulated trajectory of TS/Hurricane Polo in the coming days.

Fourth time reading War and Peace, after three-and-a-half go arounds. The first time, age 13?, gulped it down in Chinese (but I no longer have the book); the second time in college, during a period when I read Russian literature nonstop (the “half” was me making my way through with 3rd year Russian)

I've been talking a lot about the disastrous recent loss of American institutional capacity regarding climate science. But today, I'd like to announce something we've been working on, quietly, in the meantime to offer a lifeline to some of those affected. [Thread]

#PlaskettFire is burning intensely on all flanks this evening, has now burned to Hwy 1 and possibly to Pacific Ocean, and is likely over 20k acres at this point. Between Plaskett and #TimberFire to north, much of Monterey County coast is now under evacuation warnings or orders.

Snapshot of Monterey County in Watch Duty, which shows location of Plaskett and Timber fires and extensive Monterey County evacuations associated with both.

Current screenshot from NOAA Wildland Fire Viewer showing a large and intense thermal hotspot associated with Plaskett Fire, along with a large smoke plume. Weaker/smaller hotspots are visible to the north, associated with the Timber Fire.

Although it has dropped out of news in recent days, wildfire activity across western U.S. and SW Canada remains very high, with numerous large fires active. Fires are now more broadly distributed vs. early in the summer, stretching from central CA to southern BC & east to ID/MT.

Snapshot of current wildfire activity (red/orange/yellow thermal detections) and clouds as viewed on Wednesday evening. Via NOAA's Wildland Fire Data Portal.

I maintain that consumer AI products would have been received very differently if they were launched with promises like, "You can query this to sort through your inbox of 50,000 emails" rather than "What if artists starved in the streets? :)"

why did the mainstream media cover the deliberate abandonment of obsolete and decommissioned equipment during the Afghanistan withdrawal as a scandal for the Biden administration yet they do not cover the total destruction of US bases in the gulf by Iran as a scandal for the Trump administration?
