Five sites and swearing at an aidiot and The Savoy hotel & theatre are where Count Peter of Savoy used to have his palace. His neice was queen of England and had given him a bit of London. Ye olde Savoy was an Alpine region. Its queen Margherita had a pizza made for, and named after her in Naples.
A Margherita Pizza features tomato, mozzarella, and basil, two of which I didn't used to be able to pronounce. "It happened to resemble the colours of the Italian flag and according to legend, Queen Margherita loved it so much that chef Raffaele Esposito named the pizza in her honour. Another story suggests that the classic pizza was named after the Margherita flower, or the Paris daisy and the ingredients were arranged to resemble its petals." – https://48h.com.au/margherita-pizza

Non-machine summary by muggins 🙂 Some fun hobbyish computery stuff is making great strides with the help of ayy eye coding – and docs. But despite its historically manageable scale, some of the devs feel they're now standing on a wobbling stack of chairs, and it's too late to come down off it 🤖

Gonna nerd out: the BBC got 18 chip cameras in '87 to modernise OB – those less-sensitive early sensors somehow feel a bit different to outside broadcast video like in 'Robot' – whose tube cameras sent light onto phosphor paste under glass. But chips in cameras – and in the music – were The Future!
I'm not 100% sure but this is probably a still from the popularly-used EMI 2001 video camera, which used 3 tubes to monochromatically record colour through tinted prisms and a fourth to record the black and white image that those chroma signals were laid on top of. Handling the luminance and chrominance separately (for quality) is an advancement that S-VHS and Hi8 had over standard VHS. The first season of Doctor In The House from July 1969 has the earliest use of EMI 2001s I think I've ever seen – it's magical because it's so long ago yet feels as fresh as the day it was shot. Citation: https://becg.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/LWT-Technology.pdfI'll be pretty embarrasssed if this is in fact a still from a tube camera and not a chip camera. Here's a document mentioning the outside broadcast CCD cams that the BBC got, the year before Remembrance of the Daleks was broadcast: https://www.bbceng.info/additions/2017/Engineering%20Progress%20And%20Achievements%20-%201987.pdf • A Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) is a light-sensitive silicon chip where electrons flow into the top corner and then are passed on along to each video pixel in the sensor. Each picture element is coupled to its neighbour in a kind of bucket brigade so the complete video signal of each frame eventually flows out the bottom corner, onwards to the camera cable and VTR.

me pal Seelo explained that even cave art seemed like magic so art was pretty much born conjoined to The Divine and even secular art is, I think, magic to wield. So of course clerics want their best trick back but some good stuff *was* said about art being necessarily human, which was nice to hear.

Via @whoshepodcast.bsky.social who's "surprised to see this level of information so soon to be honest." • I did say then: who's on-side enough to appear as The Doctor without a contract, to avoid a de-facto ending? Billie, natch. Righto, back to waiting for Recent Who to outlive the usual fanaticism

OTD 1985: Lenny Henry is the Doctor! 41 years ago today – or could it be closer – a Black Doctor lands in an early decade of the 21st Century, where run-down, desperate Britain is ruled by soulless zombie Thatcherites… Imagine such a thing.
Lenny Henry’s face appears as the Doctor in a thrilling multi-coloured swirl not unlike Colin Baker’s Doctor Who title sequenceThe Doctor and his companions are confronted by Thatchos!

It's not the revolution that won't be 'televised,' it's the dissolution. They imagine there's a 'side' and they don't want to 'let it down' but it's like a racing driver putting on a blindfold. Wildly hazardous.

A TV studio is such a dramatically cube-shaped space that it amazes me restless directors didn't climb off the floor up into the top half more often. This format seems to get it, and the total winner is T.F.I. Friday, which did its chats in a sort of treehouse room above and BETWEEN two studios.

There will always be a place to play movies but I don't think it's going to be a place that everybody's necessarily going to want to go. There are going to be more and more easel painters and and less and less of the chapel builders and the temple builders.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

This came up because I've settled on 6 sections for my site and two of them are 'Bits' and 'Play'. In 'Bits' you'd find me tinkering with DOOM or coding up teletext, whilst in 'Play' I'd be sharing media or discussing my experiences playing with fidget spinners, Yahtzee, Frogger or Dr Who dollies. 🎲

The 'computer gaming' days are over. You no longer have to know or care how a game works, and you can have no interest in modifying it. Any modern game must play for your time with almost no guidance, like conkers or hopscotch. Games you'd tinker with are a cul-de-sac again; the rest are just play.
