Sometimes you start writing and then you realise it's all too sad.

Last night I was flying home from Cologne and as we went over the English Channel I looked down at the tiny lights below me and wondered if any of them represented a boat of people trying desperately, for some godforsaken reason, to get to this terrible island. And I wished them luck, and I wished them safety, and I wished them better than here.
