i bring an iced coffee to the interview. only it’s not for me, it’s for the interviewer. and it’s laced with a sedative. when she comes to, she’s wearing my clothes and i’m in her office. her car keys don’t work. i’m with her husband. her kids don’t recognize her. coming soon from A24.

it used to be a core political truism that there was a gas price threshold, above which people would riot. Or, at least, become very very activated. we have seen some analysis of other such truisms like inflation. I need someone to explain this one, stat.

Inaccuracy. Lost learning. Yeah, those are good reasons. But do they not also apply to the processes of getting started with a new topic, brainstorming ideas, refining your topic, identifying keywords, and summarizing readings?

It's frequently also noted that if you are using genAI products to automate your searches, your source evaluation, and the production of your paper, then you are missing the learning that is embedded in these processes.

Everything can’t be reduced to a network effect. I feel like I’m losing my mind. I mean we just watched the almost complete fascist capture of data and the internet. Surely that's a reason to reconsider.

maybe this goes against what most folks do now in teaching and in conference presentations -- but the more a session involves "active learning" or lots of interaction and engagement with the audience, the less likely I am to attend. I have zero interest in doing an activity in a learning environment

I've known this for a long time, but I wish I had known it earlier: the older I get the more I realize most people have zero idea about what they're doing. ESPECIALLY people in power. I naively used to think people got into powerful positions because they were... I dunno, smart or something.

The Trump administration arrested and deported a record number of immigrants in July, according to newly released government data – apprehending an average of 1,500 people and removing 1,100 people daily. 🧵
Two bar charts showing record immigration arrests (49,750) and removals (33,990) in July 2026.

The charts show Trump admin data in red next to Biden admin data in gray, in which the Trump numbers are significantly higher.

Notes: Monthly totals rounded to nearest 10. 'Removals' includes detentions where the stated release reason is 'removed', 'voluntary departure' or 'voluntary return'

I feel this. I’ve organized my life around thinking, writing, learning, teaching, and I’m very worried about the future. I comfort myself that my “job” as a human is to “witness the universe” and understand its beauty and that won’t change. But that doesn’t protect me from social disruption.

I regret to inform you that these traditional college courses in AI are indistinguishable from the classrooms I sat in at for-profit colleges 15 years ago. Centralized curriculum & branding, technological control, “virtual” libraries, & bureaucratic alienation of labor.

I worked with collectionHQ about 7 years ago….it was, IMO, a great resource to let people run sloppy reports, then claim they’re making data driven retention decisions while over weeding and overlooking subtleties of collection management. Bitter? Just a little 😃 circ count isn’t f’ing everything.

UCLA administrators, on a summer Friday, announced that they are closing the childcare centers on campus upon which faculty, staff and student parents rely — albeit expensive and exclusive options, but far better than none. The admin cited budget deficit. The story is hardly just that.

the best way to heal imposter syndrome is just having any interaction with anyone in a position of power in any institution, there’s an inverse relationships between occupying positions of power and being qualified for them, it’s like hierarchy naturally creates a kind of anti-meritocracy

I am stunned that the constitutional question was so close. I thought it would be 6–3 or 7–2. It is profoundly disturbing that four justices would allow either the president or Congress to rewrite the plain text of the 14th Amendment. This is obviously a good outcome, but the margin is alarming.

Also not the biggest concern, but the situation Josh is accurately describing is a compound nightmare because the lack of employers means young creatives aren't learning anything about the craft from veterans of their industries. It's all atomized. And knowledge loss is thus massive :(
