I call Elon Musk a Nazi because he's an avowed white supremacist who undermines democracies, incites pogroms, targets minorities, intentionally caused the death of >750,000 people (so far) while laughing about it ("feeding USAID into the wood chipper"), and did a Sieg Heil at Trump's inauguration.

A thought on our scholars giving up and being useless compared to AI. Maybe what you were good at was collating thoughts of others and repackaging them slightly with a smattering of your own understanding. Maybe you omitted that last step. If that's the case, you are useless compared to AI.

NEW: Two weeks ago, SCOTUS made a statement: the bloodshed of the civil rights movement can be discounted because it belongs to another era. Claims that we no longer need these protections ignore an underlying reality: laws like this are dismantled when they become inconvenient to people in power.

Destroying the Voting Rights Act wasn't just a legal ruling. It was a moral statement
The Court’s action to dismantle Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act wasn’t in isolation. It is part of a broader recalibration of rights in this country.

we can have a better world we literally just have to TRY #climatechange #solar #rewilding
A solar farm in Minnesota planted native wildflowers between its panel rows.
Five years later, total insect populations tripled. Native bees increased 20-fold.
Not only did insect populations boom, soybean fields next to the solar arrays got twice as many bee visits as fields farther away.
Two of the things we usually think of as competing turned out to reinforce each other.
One study, published in Environmental Research Letters in late 2024, tracked two utility-scale solar sites built on retired farmland in southern Minnesota, where the developer seeded native prairie species between rows of panels in 2018.
By 2022, the sites looked less like industrial energy infrastructure and more like
remnant prairie.
Goldenrod soldier beetles colonized the goldenrod stands. Bumblebees nested in the soil.
Monarch butterflies passed through during migration. The wildflower diversity grew sevenfold; insect diversity grew eightfold.
This matters because, like it or not, utility-scale solar is going to take up real space.
The US is on track to cover roughly six million acres in panels by 2050.
The default approach is turfgrass, gravel, or herbicide-maintained bare ground,
which is ecologically dead.
The Argonne study shows the alternative isn't more expensive or harder to maintain.
It's just a different seed mix.

The shooting happened on the level above the ballroom where the White House Correspondents Association dinner was.
I don't think people hearing about this -- or even those of us in the room -- realized how far from the president, VP and other guests this incident was. It was on another floor, up some stairs and several sets of security away.
Because the Washington Hilton's hotel and other public spaces were open for other functions, the entire building wasn't secured by the Secret Service, just the specific areas where the WHCA dinner was held, law enforcement officials told @CBSNews

I think the Palantir attacks on bureaucrats here is ideological - like the similarly despised professors, they are a potential source of criticism. But it is also practical. The administrative class is tasked with imposing accountability, which Palantir - like the Trump administration - dislikes.
Another way to look at this is that billionaires have joined a war on professional administrative class of public servants precisely because of their proximity to formal mechanisms of accountability. Civil servants are sworn to uphold the constitution, report wrongdoing to officials, follow the rules. They are in most respects more accountable than our politicians to ethical and legal requirements, and more difficult to buy off. This makes government slower and more irritating for sure, and puts those officials at odds with the Musks, Andreessens, and Karps of the world, whose vision and interests benefits from reduced oversight and accountability.

how adults colonize every third space and remove young people — including the Internet link: dragon-in-a-fez.tumblr.com/post/8134647...
"keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it’s immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like “yeah so this is going to happen to the internet” and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don’t even get paid for it"
