Why an AI Audiobook Won’t Make You Rich
Audiobooks are big these days. But what if you're not in audio, either because your book didn't sell or you're self-published? Are you out of the loop? Well, not necessarily thanks to AI which is popping up everywhere right now. Yes, you can use AI to turn your work into an audiobook. But is that a good idea? Is it really worth it?

With alt text. I know someone who actually did this
kbarton1001
On my first big overseas client conference, I was at a dinner seated next to a drunk client who kept trying to fondle me under the table. I was young, distressed, and had no idea what to do. I moved my legs as far away from him as I could, moving into the space of the man next to me, who then started patting my legs! The Regional Manager was a French woman who caught my eye, gestured for me to go to the bathroom and when I came back had switched chairs with me. What happed next was epic. A few minutes after I sat back down, she raised her hand with his hand captured in hers and announced loudly "Does anyone know whose hand this is? I found it in my lap." There was dead silence at the table. She threw his hand back at him and said calmly "next time I pick it up with my fork." Then she started a new conversational thread and things moved on. After the meeting she found me, gave me a hug, and said seriously "Never be afraid to make some noise. It is their shame, not yours."

The Ateneo Veneto: a fitting home for a noir festival
The Ateneo Veneto is Venice Noir’s spiritual home, a little-known spot that opened its doors to us when we were just a tiny band of book lovers with big ideas. Let me introduce you to this wondrous place. It began, in the mid-1400s, as a merger of two lay confraternities, the Scuola di San Girolamo and the Scuola di Santa Maria della Consolazione.

Stewart Lee has always been brilliant but his Nerve column really hits new heights. This should be required reading in schools - alongside ‘A Modest Proposal’. Although I guess, for balance, the poor teachers would have to find an equally good satire of the woke obsession with keeping people alive.

From tonight's Hookland talk on Re-enchantment as Resistance at @treadwells-books.bsky.social. 'Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom.' #FolkloreThursday
Folklore can ignite enchantment within us. Enchantment that fuels our imaginations. Enchantment that shifts our consciousness, allows us to envisage new and better worlds. It begins the process of manifesting the changes we desire. Re-enchanted, the world is full of new, feral possibilities. Re-enchanted our imagination is an accessible superpower.

The stories we intentionally absorb, the stories we select to tell ourselves, they allow us to live in the world differently. They allow us to make and remake the world differently.

Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom. We need this space. We ache for the sublime. For re-enchantment is an assertion of wonder and the numinosity of our relationships with landscape. Re-enchantment is an assertion of our collective ability to both imagine and experience better worlds. As a refusal of despair, as a lensing of hope. In re-enchantment we stop dreaming of inevitable apocalypse and find the permissive space to tell stories of hope.

Re-enchantment is personal metamorphosis. The space in which we grow glowing red eyes to patrol our communities against this long night of authoritarian pisspuffinry. The space in which we develop iron-hard fur, immune to the curses reductionist racists, misogynists, homophobes and AI cultists throw at us. Re-enchantment as the permissive circle where we can voyage into ourselves and find the marvels and bravery we need to deal with this age of violent bruising. This is why I walk the territory of folklore. Wear my witch-cloak of swan feathers, hold hag stone to my eye. This is why I created Hookland as a home for stories, a community for Fully-grown Changelings.

Titles, Titles, Titles: What Actually Works
Hallelujah... you've finished your first draft. A complete book. Well done. And from the outside you've probably had a working title in mind. And now — probably — you know it isn't going to work. Working titles are useful because they give you something to call the thing while you write it, a handle to grab hold of in the dark.
