This is a further encounter of Hayreddin Barbarossa and Andrea Doria:

Francis I of France entered into an alliance with the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent against Charles V, the Habsburg Emperor. Therefore, in 1543, Süleyman dispatched Barbarossa to France. Francis subsequently permitted the Ottoman fleet to winter at Toulon. For eight months, throughout the winter, the fleet remained in southern France and used Toulon as a base for operations against Habsburg territories in Spanish and Italian coasts. In 1543, a French-Ottoman forces breached Nice’s walls and captured parts of the city. But the arrival of an Imperial-Savoyard relief fleet under Andrea Doria forced the besiegers to withdraw before taking the citadel. Nice remained in Savoyard hands.

More on the Naval Battle of Preveza on September 28, 1538; a first follow-up to yesterday's post: Despite the overwhelming size of the League's fleet, one reason for the Ottoman victory lay in the composition of their own fleet. 🧵1/ #MaritimeHistory #galleys #ships
Despite the overwhelming size of the League's fleet, one reason for the Ottoman victory lay in the composition of their own fleet. The Ottomans relied exclusively on rowing ships (above all, galleys) while the Holy League fielded large sailing vessels and heavy galleons. The galleys' success in the battle cemented the Ottoman navy's long-standing preference for this type of ship. Geography played a role too: rowing ships held a significant maneuvering advantage along the Mediterranean coast , where the physical environment and climate favored their design.Geography played a role too: rowing ships held a significant maneuvering advantage along the Mediterranean coast , where the physical environment and climate favored their design.

September 28, 1538:

Hayreddin Barbarossa’s Ottoman fleet faced Andrea Doria’s Holy-League fleet off Preveza. This victory secured Ottoman naval dominance in the eastern Mediterranean for the next 33 years. The Ottoman fleet consisted of 122 rowing vessels (galleys and galleons), while the Holy League fleet comprised more than 600 vessels (galleys, galleons, sailing ships). There is some variation in the sources, particularly regarding the League's ship numbers. I've taken these numbers from the Ottoman naval historian Katib Celebi's (d. 1657) Tuhfet el-kibar fi asfar el-bihar ("The Gift to Dignitaries Concerning Naval Warfare") which covers the history of Ottoman naval warfare up to the mid-17th century. The Holy League was an alliance of naval forces from Venice, Spain, the Papal States, Genoa, Maltese Knights, and the Duchy of Mantua. The Ottoman fleet incorporated experienced North African corsair personnel, particularly those associated with Algiers. Image credit:
