Tim Reid agreed to an interview with Seth Borgen, which is ostensibly about Frank's Place, but it covers a whole lot of ground. That's up on the site today too www.barrelhousemag.com/blog/going-g...
TR: I always say that if Frank’s Place had stayed on for say six years, five years, race relations in America would be different. Not necessarily better, but different. I think culturally there would be a wider acceptance of the history, the hidden history that now is popping up. I think there would have been more pride kept within the culture of Black America. Resurfacing I would say is a better word. I come from a completely segregated community. I never even spoke socially to a white person until I was a freshman in college. And Colortown, as it was called by the people in Norfolk [Virginia]. White folks. We call it home. They call it Colortown. It was an incredible place to grow up. There were seven movie theaters in walking distance of my house. Everybody I knew, Black, who had a shop, were the head of the shop. The drug store was run by Black folks or owned by them—some had two or three drugstores. The cafes. The bars. It was such a rich Black environment. All my heroes and the heroes that I would hear about, like Lena Horne, Count Basie, they used to come through Norfolk and perform. And of course they couldn't stay in hotels, so they stayed in these apartments. Stars would come through. They had the midnight ramble. I saw Moms Mably, Pigmeat Markham. So, my world was very segregated, not by our choice but by the system. But the entertainment, the visuals that we saw, were so powerful.

Frank's Place starred Tim Reid, who has been a TV mainstay since 1977; which role you most remember him for will really show your age (WKRP? Sister, Sister? Simon and Simon?). Somehow he got wind of this essay and reached out to the author. Venus Flytrap himself reads Barrelhouse!

I have a new essay up today in @northamerreview.bsky.social, the literal first lit mag I ever submitted to, back in 2005 (they rejected me, correctly), so this is a pretty exciting one for me. It's about a person I know who has gotten obsessed with wigs. northamericanreview.org/open-space/2...
chunk from the middle of the essay that reads:
"She always has some new fixation, a new practice or product that is going to fix every problem in her life, not just the immediate malady but a long string of issues that follow from it—before the raw milk it was gardening and before that it was a new brand of natural makeup and before that it was quitting pot and before that it was smoking pot—and lately she has gotten extremely into wigs, has acquired a minimum of one new wig per month during this calendar year, has in fact asked me not to tell her husband, who I’ve only met once and to whom I never speak, about her wig purchases because she’s been buying the really high-end stuff, at prices she cannot bring herself to speak aloud, besides which she’s not sure if he has looked up from his phone long enough to notice that her hair is changing style, length, and color occasionally multiple times in a single day; "
