#HandsAroundTheKennedyCenter was a smashing success! I don’t know if the fencing allowed a complete encirclement of the building, but we definitely had enough people to do it! Yay, #HandsOffTheArts!
A large crowd forms on the grass across the street from the front of the Kennedy Center.Selfie: an older woman with glasses and very short brown hair, wearing a blue Penzeys Spices “Resist!” t-shirt, stands in a crowd with the front facade of the Kennedy Center in the background. A very large crowd stands facing the front facade of the Kennedy Center.People stand in a line with hands clasped or elbows linked facing out from the Kennedy Center facade, along the line of black bicycle fencing circling the building. It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.
Protecting against "inappropriate influence" is no longer a "hallmark" of scientific integrity

The Commerce Department updated its policy for promoting a "culture of scientific integrity" in January 2025, days before Trump's second inauguration.

A new Trump administration order bans the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using statistical “noise,” or data for fuzzing survey results, to protect people’s privacy in their statistics.

The 2025 version included bans on attempts to shape or interfere in data collection, statistical analysis and other scientific activities "against well-accepted scientific methods and theories or without scientific justification."

The department's policy, the 2025 version said, involves ensuring scientific findings at its agencies "are not suppressed, delayed, or altered for political purposes and are not subjected to inappropriate influence," as well as making sure there's "independent review of facilities, methodologies, and other scientific activities as appropriate to ensure scientific integrity."

That language is missing, however, in the Trump administration's revision of the policy, according to an NPR analysis of text posted on the Commerce Department's website.

And while the revision adopts a definition for "scientific integrity" that is similar to the previous version, it no longer says that "protection from inappropriate influence" is among the "hallmarks of scientific integrity."

Exceptional clarity from Science magazine but we need to take this one step further. Their design to break academic science is coupled with their design to re-segregate higher education and control culture, ideas, and memory. It fits with anti-DEI policies and Trump disclaimers at the Smithsonian.
The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

Judges are expected to write opinions not only for the sake of precedent, but b/c written opinions act as judicial guardrails. They help keep judges from making arbitrary or insufficiently considered opinions because they have to provide some coherent explanation for their conclusion.

I have NEVER, in the almost 50 years I’ve lived in DC/VA, seen the Mall this deserted in the week including July 4. Can’t blame this lack of turnout on the heat; it’s been hotter. But fencing off the Mall from museums, limiting access gates, prohibiting packs or bags, & proclaiming MAGA will do it.

The National Mall is fenced off in the most hostile, extreme fashion I’ve seen since I came in August 1976. This sign is outside the Mall entrance to the Air & Space Museum. The Bar Americano eatery right across that road is damn near inaccessible, and dying for lack of customers. I tipped well.
Map of DC Mall mounted on unscalable black fencing at 6th St indicates that the only pedestrian access to the Mall is at 4th Street and 14th Street. Obscured by the map is the Bar Americano food kiosk, inaccessible from the Air and Space Museum at 6th Street. (DC blocks on the Mall are very long.)

Defendants.
MEMORANDUM AND ORDER ON PLAINTIFES' MOTION FOR 5 U.S.C. § 705 STAY OR, IN THE ALTERNATIVE, PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION
ANGEL KELLEY, D.J.In 1872, Congress established Yellowstone National Park as the world's first national park, setting in motion the principle that natural wonders, historical sites, and cultural memory
belong to and serve the public. With over 433 park sites across the United States today, the
National Park system hosts millions of visitors each year seeking to enjoy the parks' iconic
views, monuments to our Nation's history, and memorials recognizing the sacrifice of many.
Beyond the scenic grandeur, the National Park system also serves as a cornerstone of public
learning, providing rich and informative signs, exhibits, and interpretive waysides on topics ranging from civil rights to environmentalism. From the echoes of abolition in John Brown's
Fort in Harpers Ferry, to the genesis of the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movement at the
Stonewall National Monument, to the retreating ice of Glacier National Park in Alaska, the
National Parks preserve the multifaceted and multi-layered history of our Nation, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. Often referred to as "America's largest classroom," National Parks
serve in that spirit by telling the stories both of those who write history and those who go
unheard. The beauty of history is the unvarnished storytelling of a time gone by and the delivery
of undeniable truths. The Government's stewardship of these park sites thus carries a responsibility to present history in full rather than in favored fragments.Unfortunately, the Government has disregarded these principles. Under the guise of
promoting American dignity, this Administration seeks to share a limited history by ordering the
removal of all signs, displays, and interpretive exhibits at National Parks that do not align with
its preferred narrative, thereby telling half-truths. In recent months, the Government has torn
down exhibits in Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park memorializing the legacy
1 162 Cong. Rec. H7207 (daily ed. Dec. 6, 2016).

of people enslaved by the country's first President; removed signage detailing climate threats at
Fort Sumter in South Carolina, one of the most environmentally endangered sites in the country;
and wiped away descriptions of history and science at countless National Parks across the United
States. Not only does this undermine the integrity of the National Parks; it sets a dangerous
precedent of censorship and sanitization. The National Park Service Organic Act, the National
Park Service Centennial Act, and the National Parks Omnibus Management Act, as well as the
Administrative Procedure Act do not authorize such arbitrary and capricious action. The Court
thus GRANTS Plaintiffs' Motion for a Stay Pursuant to 5 U.S.C. § 705.Because Defendants deemed it important to strip the parks of these undeniable truths in anticipation of the 250th Anniversary of our great Nation, it is equally important that our shared history be honestly told and fully restored by the 250th Anniversary to properly honor the remarkable achievements of the United States. Accordingly, it is hereby ORDERED:
Plaintiffs' Motion to Stay Under 5 U.S.C. § 705 is GRANTED forthwith.
