For #RandomGameSaturday I’m submitting the Rhythm Heaven games I bought on the cheap. Absolutely nothing wrong with these games, very pumped to see a new release!

Arcade cabinet playing Rhythm Heaven Arcade, with boxed copies of Rhythm Heaven Fever for the Wii and Rhythm Heaven for Nintendo DS.

I made a tool that turns PCB designs into 3D-printable molds. you sandwich copper tape between the parts, sand the ridges, and you have a real working PCB. no etching, no chemicals. I am losing my mind castpixel.itch.io/pcb-forge

I printed it and stuck self-adhesive copper tape to it. There's copper tape with conductive adhesive so you can add multiple overlapping pieces and it counts as one conductive surface.

Then I used the second part of the mold to shape the copper, so that it sticks inside the recessed traces.

Then I used sandpaper to file away at the raised ridges. The copper traces are now electrically independent of each other. Done!

But if I want, I can remove the extra copper tape.

The companion mold at the bottom. This second 3D-printed part pushes the copper tape down into the recessed trace channels so it conforms to the shape. The two parts sandwich together with alignment spikes to keep everything registered.

#RandomGameSaturday time, it's Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors. Not so random, I'm borrowing it currently to test with my new arcade cabinet. Pictured alongside my PS1 copy, how I played the game the most originally. My 4 years old son has been obsessed with the game, asking to play most mornings.

Arcade cabinet with Darkstalkers on display, X-Men Children of the Atom art, and a boxed copy of Darkstalkers for Playstation.

For #RandomGameSaturday is just Goonies for Famicom, special Komatsu ed. I mostly played this on a Playchoice back in the day, as it never had a domestic release, just Goonies 2.

For my Random Game Saturday, it’s The Masked Rider ZO for Sega CD. It beat Saban’s attempt to localize Kamen Rider by about a year, and has some amazing designs by Keita Amemiya. I didn’t know the connection until later with Zeiram, but I’m sure the screenshots from EGM’s feature caught my attention

It’s Saturday, so it’s time for Metal Gear Acid 2. I really enjoyed both of the games in the series, this one is notable for its cel-shaded graphics in a series known for more realistic texture work. Of course it also came with a stereoscopic sleeve to watch CG cutscenes and bikini models in 3D.

A picture of Metal Gear Acid 2 for PSP. The box, a UMD and the 3D stereoscopic sleeve you could slip a PSP into for watching videos or gameplay in 3D.

It's Video VVednesday! Share a piece of obsolete physical media! VHS, Laserdisc, VCD, UMD, whatever you've got. It's Tenchi Muyo Mihoshi Special on LD. This was an amazing gift. My one thing I loved about anime LDs were the liner art and big beautiful sleeves, even when the DVD or BD surpassed it.

As 2024 is coming to a close, I’m reflecting on my current mindset for trying to methodically categorize digital pinball games to filter out titles that aren’t flipper pinball.

A comic meme of Calvin’s dad and explaining something to Calvin.

Panel 1
Dad: Playing a digital pinball game? I’ll show you something interesting.

Panel 2:
Dad: The two types of digital pinball games are bagatelle and flipper pinball. All digital pinball games fall into one of these two categories. Pinball FX? Flipper pinball. Pachiokun? Bagatelle.
Calvin: Yeah…

Panel 3:
Dad: pinball Quest? Flipper pinball. Peggle? Bagatelle. Akira Psychoball? Flipper pinball. Despite having pinball in the name, Pokemon Pinball Mini is actually bagatelle.

Panel 4:
Calvin is lying awake at night in bed, clearly losing sleep over thinking about what is flipper pinball and what is bagatelle.

1️⃣ The first console you bought yourself? 2️⃣ The first console you then sold off? 3️⃣ The first console you decided to re‐buy? 1. The SNES. 2. Also the SNES. Sold it and a lot of my games to get money for the PS1 launch. 3. Yep. Again the SNES, and a lot of the games I sold the friend I’d sold it to.

Game collection Saturday for me features Escape from Cyber City for the CDi. It’s an adaptation made up Adieu Galaxy Express 999. I recall originally seeing it as an arcade laserdisc game at Malibu Grand Prix in Ohio. When they dissolved, it got ported to the CDi.

Survivorship bias or survival bias is the logical error of concentrating on entities that passed a selection process while overlooking those that did not. This can lead to incorrect conclusions because of incomplete data.
