I’m going to let my experience with the first game percolate a bit more before diving fully in, but I fired up Langrisser II just now for fun. First impressions: 1) It’s much blombier than the first game. 2) It crashed during the first scenario. On my MiSTer. That’s a first!

This is all I’ve got, a frozen screen with troops in the midst of hugging it out.

That’s a wrap on Warsong/Langrisser! Excellent tactical RPG that maintains its addictiveness even when you’re floundering about a bit to learn what it wants from you. The difficulty peaks about 60% of the way through and then it stays challenging to the end while rarely being too cruel again.

Eyy, check it out, we’re almost done! Scenarios 18 and 19 are both really fun. You can run 18 with a minimal troop accompaniment and just focus on your last couple of commanders who need to reach their final rank. And I started 19 with everyone maxed, so I just plowed through it with commanders…

Man, I’m hesitant in this vibe-coded era to give any creator too much credit in case something shitty about them comes out later, but it sure as shit seems like Jotego is putting in some real, honest effort to do things the right way in this era of slopcores from everyone else and their sister.

“JTKCPU: back to the real board

Konami's custom CPU sits at the heart of quite a few arcade favorites. This week I put the FPGA's JTKCPU through a major update based on measurements from a real Vendetta PCB. We ran instruction probes on the original 053248 chip, recording results, condition flags and timing, then used that evidence to revise the FPGA CPU. This was done using Wickerwaka's PicoROM.”

“The research exposed previously unknown instruction encodings and several cases where the old model set flags incorrectly. A game can make a decision on one of those flags, so a small CPU detail can become a very visible difference on screen. This is all new information for the whole scene, FPGA and software emulation alike.

This affects games already supported by JTCORES:
Aliens, Crime Fighters, Gang Busters / Crazy Cop, Super Contra, Thunder Cross, Ajax / Typhoon, Haunted Castle, The Simpsons, Parodius DA!, Surprise Attack and Vendetta. They share JTKCPU in our cores, although the physical measurements were made on Vendetta's 053248 and there is an older Konami CPU variant that still needs its own checks.”

Welcome to FUCK YOU!!!, aka Scenario 12 in Warsong. Half your forces start on the left against somewhat manageable foes. And half start sandwiched between very powerful troops, including 2 mage commanders who will ruin your day. What’s a boy to do?

The top half of the battlefield on the right in S12. Soldiers would normally trade against soldiers (left) and be superior to archers (right), but not when the enemy has much higher levels. Both of these commanders are spellcasters who can hit you 4 times each if you’re not careful. But wait, there’s more…

The bottom half of the same area. All soldiers, but all strong, and you’ll need to cut through them to avoid the shitstorm above you. The numbers of troops are even, but you can fully expect to drop two units per unit you take out a lot of the time.

No need to name and shame, but what if I told you that I did a search on here for an obscure game that someone else mentioned and stumbled into a book-length thread from one guy none of you follow covering 1/4 of a year in gaming that’s both the length of a novel and completely lacking in substance?

This is all from one guy over the course of 3 days. Pretty much every post in their thread is a screenshot coupled with the most mundane description of the game in question imaginable. No real personality or style injected into any of it. Leonard Herman, eat your heart out.

Nearing the end of Scenario 10 when hilarity ensues: “Oh no, I’m missing a Commander! Did that spell kill Tiberon?! No…wait…one of his units is here, so then where’s….ah, there he is!”

Tiberon ain’t here, but that’s one of his units, indicating that he’s still alive somewhere. But where…?

Ah, there he is, that dot in the lower left part of the map! He got pretty banged up from his last fight there, so I was in the process of healing him and accidentally moved my entire army along without him. Oops!

“Sweetie, you missed the bus and I don’t have time to drive you to school. Sorry, but you’re gonna have to walk all the way there!”

Random observation about Transformers: The Movie: Ever notice how the only Decepticons we see following Galvatron around are the reformatted guys *until* the script suddenly calls for a pair of jobbers to show up so that Daniel can run over them in his exosuit?

Shrapnel in particular suffers endless humiliation in this film. His clone doesn’t even get to be changed into either of the two lead underlings, just a regular Sweep scrub.
