Oooooooh, a parade! And that would be well-timed for the release of the mini-hardcover of Old Man's War. Also, I support promoting the contributions of Italian-American authors.

Also, Christopher Columbus was a rapacious genocidal asshole, and kind of think he shouldn't have a national holiday here in the US, seeing that, you know, he didn't even come here (he landed in Hispaniola and never made it to the continental US), and think Native Americans are right to be pissed he has a federal holiday and they don't.

SO, I will be happy to participate as long as no one involved has a problem with me stating, on my blog (or elsewhere), something along the lines of the following (because I WILL be asked about it):

"As a proud Italian-American, I am delighted to take a day to mark the accomplishments of Italian-Americans in and for this country, including those of the many authors who can claim Italian ancestry. Also, I think Christopher Columbus was largely a terrible person, whose "discovery" of the Americas offers very little for those who whose ancestors were already in this part of the world to celebrate. On October 9th, I will be celebrating the former, not the latter, when I participate in New York City's parade.

"I also support a national federal holiday recognizing the Indigenous People of the United States, and as an Italian-American would be delighted to have such a holiday share a date on the calendar with a holiday celebrating Italian-Americans, if the US decided it had no more federal holidays to spare.

"In earnest of this support, I will donating my royalties from the first week sales of the new hardcover release of Old Man's War to the Partnership with Native Americans, to support their initiatives to improve lives for Native Americans in this country. It will take a bit for those royalties to get to me, so I'm donating $1,000 as a down payment on this commitment."

As long as everyone's cool with that, I'm in. If not, that's cool too.

The thing people don't get about the American Healthcare System is that yes: it's insanely overpriced. Yes: the doctors will only spend 5-10 minutes with you. And yes: the doctors will try to boot you from the hospital when you're still seriously ill. BUT the hospital food? Also not good.

Juarez’s comments are pretty bad. There’s no doubt that we need to do more to ensure people who are not able bodied can easily get to train stations. But rather than suggest ways to do so, she just assumes driving will always be the only answer.
