The scree gullies act as diagonal leading lines that carry the eye up into the main peak, where the brightest openings in the cloud sit just above and to its right and hold attention there. Fog banks overlap the ridgelines and separate them into layers, which creates depth. The tonal range runs from near-black to near-white, with the rock held in the midtones so the sky carries the mood. The result is foreboding rather than serene, and the monochrome treatment reduces the Dolomites to rock, vapor and light.
