Standing solitary upon a metal-grated walkway against the glowing nocturnal panorama of Shinjuku, Tokyo, a woman dressed in an unlined summer kimono (yukata) gazes down into the cool, blue-white light of her smartphone. Her white cotton garment is brushed with dynamic, ink-black bamboo (take) stalks and leaves, secured at the waist by a tailored white obi and accented by a scarlet hair flower resting in her sculpted updo. Behind her, the towering glass monoliths of Tokyo’s financial district reach into the deep indigo sky, their illuminated windows and neon signboards casting ambient light across the dark urban horizon. The photograph radiates a captivating modern sensory atmosphere: the sharp, LED glow casting soft highlights over porcelain-powdered skin, the low, rhythmic hum of nocturnal highway traffic filtering through the evening air, the crisp feel of starch-finished cotton against a warm summer breeze, and the faint, wooden click of traditional footwear resting upon cold steel paving. This striking composition captures the living evolution of Japanese urban attire within the heart of modern metropolis infrastructure. Originally derived from the yukatabira—light hemp robes worn by Heian-period court nobility after steam baths—the yukata transitioned during the Edo period into the quintessential summer garment of townspeople (chōnin), celebrated for its breathable cotton weave and expressive stencil-dyed patterns. The bamboo motif adornment draws upon centuries of classic design, where the plant symbolizes resilience, purity, and flexibility amidst seasonal shifts.

This kurotomesode features an elegant composition of mythical phoenixes soaring among luxurious peony blossoms, rendered in subtle gradations of cream, ivory, and soft gray tones against the formal black silk ground. 1900-1920, Japan
This kurotomesode features an elegant composition of mythical phoenixes soaring among luxurious peony blossoms, rendered in subtle gradations of cream, ivory, and soft gray tones against the formal black silk ground. The phoenixes are depicted with elaborate plumage, their feathers carefully articulated through delicate brushwork, while the full-blown peonies display the characteristic layered petals with golden stamens at their centers.

The naturalistic rendering of the flora and fauna demonstrates the influence of both classical Japanese painting traditions and the period's interest in more realistic representation. The restrained color palette, dominated by monochromatic tones with selective golden accents, creates an effect reminiscent of ink wash paintings while maintaining the luxurious formality appropriate to this ceremonial garment.

The symbolic pairing of phoenix and peony carries profound cultural significance—the phoenix representing rebirth, immortality, and imperial virtue, while the peony symbolizes honor, wealth, and feminine beauty. Together, they form an auspicious combination particularly appropriate for formal occasions such as weddings or court ceremonies. The placement of the motifs in the lower portion of the kimono follows traditional kurotomesode conventions, creating a sense of groundedness and stability while allowing the wearer's movement to animate the flowing composition of mythical birds and blooming flowers.

Edward Steichen : Delphiniums, 1940 Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY Dye-imbibition print (also known as a Technicolor or imbibition color print), which Steichen used to deeply intensify the rich blues, mauves, and purples of the flowers. Further info in the alt text 👇
An entire bed of towering delphinium spires grown and crossbred by Steichen himself at his Umpawaug Farm in Redding, Connecticut.

Plant Breeding:
Steichen was an expert plant breeder and served as the president of the American Delphinium Society from 1935 to 1939. He treated his farm as a living studio, spending decades hybridizing new strains (including one named after his brother-in-law, Carl Sandburg).

Art and Nature:
Rather than just recording what plants looked like, Steichen used advanced color photography processes, sharp composition, and precise lighting to turn his botanical crossbreeds into structural, sculptural studies of texture and form.

Exhibition History:
His deep connection between gardening and photography was highlighted in major career retrospectives, including the exhibition Edward Steichen and the Garden at the George Eastman Museum

Created in 1992 by Yuka Taguchi (田口由花), this painting stands as a masterwork of contemporary Nihonga (traditional Japanese-style painting)
Reclined in quiet grace upon a shimmering ground of dusted gold, a sleek black cat gazes with vibrant green eyes toward an overarching vine of brilliant blue morning glories (asagao). The composition masterfully balances the dark, velvety silhouette of the cat with the rich lapis hues of the fully blossomed flower, framed by deep green foliage outlined with fine, golden veins and a single emerging pink bud. The painting exudes an intimate, serene sensory atmosphere: the cool, soft texture of fine silk beneath delicate paws, the faint rustle of garden foliage catching a gentle morning breeze, the dew-drenched freshness of an early dawn bloom, and the quiet, rhythmic purr of a feline resting in watchful solitude.
Taguchi utilizes traditional natural pigments alongside sunago (dusted gold leaf) to construct a luminous background that illuminates the deep black tones of the cat's fur. The painstaking precision in the individual whiskers, fine claws, and intricate leaf venation showcases monozukuri—the unwavering devotion to artisanal mastery and technical discipline.

“Totoro”. Studio Gibli, Japan
Framed by the dark, silhouetted trunks of ancient trees and branches laden with vibrant magenta foliage, an enchanted woodland realm opens into a soft, luminous mist. In the foreground, perched upon an emerald-paved stone path, the small white forest spirit (Chibi-Totoro) and medium blue spirit (Chū-Totoro) sit side-by-side, their backs turned as they gaze toward the glowing horizon. Rising beyond the grassy knoll, the colossal, gentle form of the great forest guardian (O-Totoro) emerges, his immense slate-grey head and wide, inquisitive eyes peeking through the canopy. A hazy canyon and pale, layered mountain peaks drift in the background under a soft, dreamlike sky. The illustration evokes a magical sensory atmosphere: the cool, damp fragrance of moss-covered earth and spring leaves, the quiet whisper of mountain breezes through high boughs, the faint rustle of spirit footsteps along ancient stones, and the breathless, reverent awe of stepping into a hidden sanctuary of nature. Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated masterwork My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this stylized artwork celebrates the film’s profound roots in Shinto animism and environmental reverence. Set in the lush, agricultural satoyama landscape of Japan’s post-war countryside, the narrative re-enchants the natural world by portraying kami—indigenous spirits that inhabit ancient camphor trees, rivers, and deep woodlands—as benevolent guardians accessible through the pure, unsullied imagination of youth. Studio Ghibli’s legacy of traditional hand-drawn animation embodies the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material craft), where thousands of hand-painted cels and richly rendered background art celebrate the textures of rain, wind, and foliage.

This is a baby aardwolf. They're members of the hyena family but they're small insectivores who eat mostly termites. (Other hyenas are the spotted, the striped, and the brown.) Aaardwolves are not related to aardvarks and, despite looking like dogs, are more closely related to cats and mongooses.
