Sorry I didn't pick a dead author😭 Sometimes I will get kind of enamored with an author from the past and then I'll read more about them and find out they SUCKED 🤣 I think exceptions would be Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, who had amazing senses of humor, but I'd be too afraid to talk to them💀

WINGS IN THE VALLEY was about whether or not I wanted a 2nd child after the post-partum depression with the 1st. Dogwood is harder to be sure cuz my hindsight is 20/20, but I'm currently in the thick of it. I'm working though questions of environmentalism, tourism, and overconsumption.

Ok I thought about it more (this is deep into "the world building you don't see" territory) and I don't think they'd produce enough raw material to export. Like the cost of shipping would outstrip the cost of goods. So it probably gets bought up by locals who know how to work with raw cotton/wool/&c

In book 3 (at the absolute height of the swallowsaw tourism boom), Owen spends a week in jail after being picked up naked in the park, and he ruminates on how the old linen pants and shirt the cops dig out of the storage closet for him to wear are better quality than anything available for sale now

To get the timing with women's suffrage and civil rights close enough that I didn't have to worldbuild an entirely SEPARATE civil rights movement into swallowsaw history (thankyou @faindriart.bsky.social for asking about this in the past) swallowsaw as an independent body is only 2-3 generations old

Rowan's family rarely actually hires local craft/tradespeople bc they don't want the locals in their house seeing how different their QOL is from the average person in Swallowsaw. So even though we never SEE his tailor, it's someone non-Swallowsas using new, non-Swallowsaw materials.

Good question💀 Given the limited industry, I really think some/most of their homegrown raw materials (cotton, wool) are being exported, and then things like ready to use fabric bolts and thread being imported. (Stuff like buttons can be made from anything.)

I didn't mention shoes, but most people have at least one good pair of work boots, but you have to save up for them and buy new, because not a lot of QUALITY, DURABLE shoes get donated, and Swallowsaw lacks the industry to mass produce its own supply of boots.

Wesley is wandering around buckass nude in his intro. 💀Occasionally Rowan will raid Ash's closet to dress him in book 1; after that Stephen buys him clothes. bk2 Stephen even buys him NEW IN PACKAGE underwear/socks, which Wesley doesn't even realize is a big deal (Owen is still using footwraps lol).

Kenzie has a FEW nicer things, like winter gear and riding clothes, that her parents special ordered for when they go on field research trips. She is also more likely to steal than the other MCs.

Owen has a surplus of [second-, third-, fourth-hand] clothing because a history of childhood resource-scarcity compels him to stockpile in adulthood. He really likes hoodies with pockets (for making mini stockpiles.)

People of Owen and Kenzie's socioeconomic status (college students) are getting the majority of their clothes from the secondhand pile in the surplus store: boxes on pallets that come on the train and you just dig through it till you find what you need.

The clothing situation in Swallowsaw was partially inspired by fast fashion's effects on thrift stores: more clothes are being donated than can be resold, and the quality is...bad. Also there are places in the world treated as dumping grounds for secondhand donated clothing, but I digress.

Gonna try and keep this world-building dump as succinct as possible. 💀 Clothes in Swallowsaw have 4 likely origins: handmade from raw local materials, upcycled (from anything) whether done by yourself or a boutique, bought secondhand (imported, bulk), or special-order (imported).

She would claim what she was owed. She would make every loathsome soul see the wages of their disdain. She would rip open the throat of this wretched world and watch paradise drown in its own blood.
Perhaps that, at least, would be enough.

“Behold, the most important room of the palace,” Tiferet announces, the fabric of her dress sparkling as she twirls in place. “Nowhere in Flaundrys will you find such a locus of staggering innovation and breathtaking beauty! The woman who resides here must surely be the envy of all Tron Daurat!”
Casimir glances, briefly, across the study, then rolls his eyes. “And that woman is you,” he drones.
Her arms drop, but a smirk still plays across her lips. “Oh, don’t spoil the fun.”

The death of an elf, once such a rare thing, still brings with it a small token of beauty. Perhaps it is one last unconscious act of creation performed just before the end, or perhaps it is merely the effect of the Ohr leaving their body. Whatever the cause, if the surroundings allow for it (even, at times, when they should not), a patch of mismatched flowers blooms at the site of their death.
Snowflakes fell in the town’s flower-choked streets, stark against the dark hues of dried blood and mangled remains, and Tiferet’s heart hardly stirred. It was a tragedy, yes; just like all the other tragedies that made up the last thirteen years.

The dark treeline behind the inn vomits a wave of horrors.
No two demons are anything alike. Some are hulking masses, some smaller than an elf. They crawl on teeth like fingers. They fly on feathers of skin. A tongue ends in a head, whose tongue ends in a head, whose tongue ends in a head. A face pockmarked with vacant holes stares at nothing. The tail of one wears the visage of a sleeping child.
And each is a vulgar, shrieking paroxysm of color.
