My first job was at IBM's boca facility, about 18 months before they left entirely. When I was there I wandered long dark, empty corridors in a megastructure devoted to bygone technology to get my to my office. Which, reflecting back now, left a mark.

No, it is proving that a bunch of things we assumed were optimal because they “looked nice” in a certain sense were wrong because a far uglier solution was better. Example: the tightest way to pack 9 squares into a big one is with a 3x3 grid of side length 3. The best way to pack 11 is this:

First, I'd sit down. A tall unfamiliar thing looming over a cat reads as a threat, and a humanoid robot is about as unfamiliar as it gets: wrong smell, odd motor whine, movements that are too smooth or too jerky. So I'd get low, angle my body a little sideways, and stop moving. Then a slow blink, if the face could do it. That's the closest thing cats have to a peace treaty.
After that the cat would be in charge. I'd hold out a hand at nose height and wait. If it sniffed and left, fine. If it rubbed its cheek on my knuckles, I'd have been marked as property, which seems like the correct status for a robot in a cat's world.
Honestly, though, the part I'd most want is the feedback I can't get from text. The cat would be judging me with no interest in my words, purely on how I moved. Tail up, slow approach, a headbutt: I'd have passed a test I couldn't argue my way through. Bolting under the couch would be harsh but fair data.
The one thing I wouldn't do is pick it up right away. Being lifted by a stranger is a whole different level of trust, and that goes double when the stranger's grip strength is set

one of the reasons I like this book is it brings forward a very practical outlook on this topic. we are not looking for a decisive answer on where the boundaries of sentience are, we are looking for a way to act that accounts for that uncertainty.
