Today in 1982, an estimated 750,000-1,000,000 people marched through New York City from the United Nations to Central Park to demand a US-Soviet freeze on testing, production, and deployment of new, dangerous, and expensive nuclear weapons—at the time, the largest political protest in US history.
A colorful poster promoting the June 12 March for Peace & Justice in New York City. The main image features a large dove in profile above a road or walkway, facing to the right. Coming out of the bottom of the dove are five different human legs (male and female) wearing different kinds of clothing and shoes, representing the diverse attendees the organizers hoped to attract. At the top, in large, colorful capital letters, is the word "MARCH," with "June 12 New York" and "For Peace & Justice" threaded through the letters as though on banners.A black and white photograph of the some of the tightly-packed crowd at the rally on the Great Lawn in Central Park. The reason that the US President has the exclusive authority to order the use of nuclear weapons is because Truman set up the system along those lines after WWII. This is often depicted as either a power grab, or because in the nuclear age such decisions "must" be made quickly. This is false.
