Given they HAVE (surprisingly) included Welsh as being acceptable alongside English suggests this is sheer ignorance & stupidity driven by their core racism. *Or* they regard Irish as “foreign” and - common to Anglo-British views - Sc. Gaelic as being just a dialect thereof. Either way F. Off.

"Fellows shall not act or fail to act in any way which would […] bring the Society into disrepute." But this morning ministers condemned Elon Musk FRS for enabling violence on the streets of Belfast. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026... Would the @royalsociety.org like to comment?
Extract from linked article reads:

"Violence in Belfast that forced families to flee their homes on Tuesday night was fuelled by online commentators who would struggle to find the city on the map, Northern Ireland’s justice minister has said.

The condemnation by Naomi Long came as a UK cabinet minister said that Elon Musk also had a responsibility “not to stoke grievance”. The billionaire owner of X had used his own account to share images of a horrific knife attack in Belfast on Monday and had amplified far-right messaging about it."

Happy #BlackHoleWeek! 🖤 My black hole chonk chart is back, now with real LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA data ✨ More gravitational-wave detections are on the way, so this chart may need another update very soon. 😎 #BlackHoles #GravitationalWaves #SciComm @ligo.org @egovirgo.bsky.social
An infographic titled “How BIG are the BLACK HOLES we find with GRAVITATIONAL WAVES?” by @astronerdika. The graphic is a playful “black hole chonk chart” showing black hole masses in units of solar masses, written as M☉, where M☉ means the mass of the Sun. The top half categorises black holes by mass, with each category shown as a curled-up black cat that grows larger from left to right.

The categories from left to right are:

1. “<5 M☉”

* Labeled “smol”
* Tiny curled-up black cat
* Arrow pointing left: “THIS WAY TO NEUTRON STARS”
* Example on the graph: “Big component of GW230529 ~3.6 M☉”

2. “~10 M☉”

* Labeled “basic”
* Small curled-up black cat
* Annotation: “LOTS OF BLACK HOLES” with an arrow pointing to this range
* The population curve rises steeply and peaks around here

3. “~35–45 M☉”

* Labeled “hefty”
* Larger curled-up black cat
* Sits near a smaller bump in the population curve

4. “>60 M☉”

* Labeled “chonky”
* Large curled-up black cat
* Nearby annotation: “FORBIDDEN TERRITORY? can these even be made from the collapse of star cores?!”
* Example: “Components of GW190521 ~85 M☉ + ~66 M☉”

5. “>100 M☉”

* Labeled “oh lawd”
* Very large curled-up black cat overlapping the panels
* Arrow pointing right: “THIS WAY TO INTERMEDIATE MASS BLACK HOLES”
* Example: “Components of GW231123 ~137 M☉ + ~103 M☉”

Below the categories is a graph of the inferred black hole population. The horizontal axis is labeled from 3 M☉ to 120 M☉. The vertical axis is labeled “log scale.” The population rises sharply around 5–10 M☉, peaks in the “basic” range, then declines toward higher masses, with a smaller bump around the “hefty” range. Dashed pale pink lines show an uncertainty band.

Text along the curve reads: “Real data from the LVK collaboration! Check out the paper: arXiv:2508.18083.” The style is hand-drawn, humorous, and inspired by the “Chonky Cat” meme.

Reporting by @astrobites.bsky.social on the impact of the proposed US budget on astronomy astrobites.org/2025/06/02/b... by @skylargrayson.bsky.social 🔭🧪⚛️☄️
"And you may not realize it, but many important astrophysics observatories and programs are funded not by NASA, but by the NSF. Figure 4 shows the cuts to some of the biggest. Of particular note is the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), which operates two locations in the U.S., one in Washington and the other in Louisiana. LIGO found the first detection of gravitational waves, opening up a whole new era of multi-messenger astronomy. This budget request would shut down one of these two locations, which drastically reduces the usefulness of the observatory. Having two detectors makes it much easier to separate out signals from the noise, and having more than one detector allows us to place the region in the sky where the signal could be coming from."

The 2025 #NASA astrophysics senior review report is public. "Every mission received the highest possible rating for... scientific return", & are "producing important, impactful science in a cost-effective manner". Some important screenshots: assets.science.nasa.gov/content/dam/...
The Panel appreciates the significant budget uncertainties facing NASA, SMD, and APD. The Panel
recognizes the particular gravity of this report relative to those reports in the recent past. The Panel
nevertheless strongly believes that each mission under review continues to be capable of producing
important, impactful science in a cost-effective manner and would do so if allowed to continue
operations into the next extended mission cycle. This belief remains true if missions had to be extended
with reduced capability, reduced community resources, or both. Cuts to community resources or capabilities
will reduce the science output of these missions, but the missions remain viable and productive.
Furthermore, many of the most insightful science results arise from combining the observations of more than one mission in NASA’s fleet, leveraging complementary capabilities.
