1/Patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) are used in preclinical testing of cancer therapies, including metabolic therapies. We determined which metabolic properties are retained, and which are lost, when melanomas from patients are implanted and passaged as PDXs in mice. www.nature.com/articles/s42...

Today I changed the carburetor in the lawnmower I inherited from my father-in-law. Except for the belt, I’ve replaced almost everything on the mower because I think for some reason this would have made him proud. Or, I’m just trying to prove to a deceased man that I’m good enough for his daughter.

This is a crappy feeling for a young PI that feels like they won’t have this opportunity after they chose to start their lab at a world class institution. They could easily spread the wealth by limiting the awards given to these top institutions rather than barring applications from them completely.
