as soon as I realized I didn't need to be able to "solve for X" in regards to reconciling my forensic psych experience & abolition, it was easy to identify as an abolitionist No idea how we get there AND that's where we need to be doing my best to punch up at this level that's all I can do today

I’ve learned not to follow up too closely on if those individuals end up in prison It’s paralyzing when they don’t go to the hospital instead of to prison I’m going to keep doing this work so that folks don’t rot in jail if where they need to be is treatment This is a huge part of my perspective

One job I still currently have is for counties & the state to contract with me to go meet with someone in a jail to see if I think they meet criteria for involuntary commitment either because their charges ought to be dropped, were already dropped, or they were found not guilty by reason of insanity

She was offered care, she declined, wasn’t committed because it wasn’t obvious, or this is how I understand it that the system did fail her a bit but society’s larger failings are the real problem, not a missed psychosis screening

yeah that recent case is local to me and while I had no direct knowledge of her case, it’s also not uncommon What’s uncommon is that we heard about it because she was a while lady in Boston, could find you several Black moms who went to prison instead, if I tried

I went in being like “well obviously some people belong in prison” Was there like “well obviously no one needs prison nearly as much as gets incarcerated but this needs to exist” Now, I am at “no this needs to be abolished but I don’t know how we get there”

I willingly went to go work at a prison, loved my job, am STILL now an abolitionist but I’m a confounded abolitionist because did we need to lock up Christa Pike Initially? Yes! Probably! But she should be made well and sent home. I have a hard time reconciling these two things w/ my experience

What makes this case remarkable is that the us Supreme Court got involved with a lethal injection case HIPAA, the law, & NDA’s say I can’t say much more specifics but I pinkie swear this system ignores what’s right in this regard All The time Robert Roberson is another example case It’s fucked

Unfortunately the wrong thing happens with this All The Time I have personally recommended that individuals meet criteria for charges being dismissed or being not guilty by reason of insanity I’ve seen those people go to prison regardless of mental defect over and over and over This is not rare

the murder was 32 years ago Pike was 18, reportedly victim of what sounds to be horrific abuse as a child, and mentally ill she's been diagnosed with bipolar disorder & PTSD after the index event she needed HELP as a CHILD but the US Supreme Court just decided to let Tennessee put her to death

it's not illegal to let your patient leave quickly it's not illegal to let someone leave the ER it's not illegal to show them the door she patched up her patient and ushered them to safety, arguably unaware that this person was (allegedly) in formal custody Chloe is a hero and deserves to be free

one time in my 20s i was passing through another city and crashed with a guy i knew who was in love with my friend so thought it was safe. but he made an advance and i said no, so he started arguing with me. i didnt sleep a wink that night and stared from the couch at the kitchen knife on the wall.

One of the many horrific aspects of the death penalty is that states are not good at carrying out executions. Every time I post about this, someone responds by saying that it should be simple. But it’s not, and proponents of the death penalty need to own that.

the supreme court made a ruling TODAY that made this happen TODAY, despite a stay to revisit her case, and legal process was pending the state felt it was urgent to kill her today and they couldn't even do it beyond horrible, this is a hellscape this is the bad place
