Neat trick if you polycolonal ab's suck. Incubate them with fixed cells with a KO of your protein of interest, then spin. Protocol here: www.med.upenn.edu/markslab/ass... I was amazed how well it worked on first try (I'm sure that I can completely eliminate unspecific bands) #WesternBlot #cellsky
On the left - western blot of B16F10 cells wt and KO for CDK8. Our in house produced antibodies give a lot of unspecific bands. On the right same probes with antibodies preincubated with fixed CDK8 KO cells - there is a specific band and faint unspecific bands, which can be probably eliminated with increase of amount of KO cells.

While I think AI can be extremely helpful and useful in some scenarios, I think we also need to take a step back and look at how we are using this type of technology. I also think we need to be aware of how to spot AI in both art and writing so we can call out stuff like this.

Ashley Peer @ashophagy.bsky.social · 17/06/2025
Gut Pathogens is a part of Springer Nature, whose policy states that AI cannot be considered an author, and use of a learning language model should be stated in the paper. In this paper the use of AI is not mentioned anywhere. AI-generated images are not permitted, with some exceptions.

This figure is what really gave it away to me. Words like “bloodstroom/bloedstream” “aimmune” and “Erysipelotrichacee”, multiple misleading labels of the vagus nerve and the weird labeling of lymphatics gives it away. This paper was published in Gut Pathogens a little over a week ago.

How did I know AI was used in the publication? The truth is, I can’t say with 100% certainty that it was. But certain aspects stuck out to me, including multiple misspellings and mislabeling in figures, excessive use of em dashes, and inconsistency in grammar and punctuation.
