I’m so sorry to hear that! I hope what you find next is fulfilling and fun. ❣️ I wish more people understood the value of good document design, especially when using a tool like InDesign. So much time and money is invested in remediating documents, instead of addressing the root of the problem.

InDesign can be tough to work with, but my students are really taking the time to learn how it works and do things right. I can’t tell you how proud I am. Now I’m just sad that the semester is almost over!

Their final project is creating a portfolio of their designs from this class as an accessible, interactive PDF. We’re approaching this just like a web design project: starting with good content, adding structure, then using visual styling to reflect that structure.

I told the students that they could use an alternative as long as they cleared it with me first. So far, everyone has opted to stick with Adobe because it's free to use on the classroom computers. I'm teaching this online next semester, though, so I imagine it'll come up then!

Accessibility is not an overly complicated topic, nor a barrier for creativity. Accessible design is following best practices that benefit everyone. Why teach composition without discussing reading order? Or typography without readability?

One of my favorite things about teaching a lower-level graphic design course is getting to prove a point that I’ve been making for years: accessibility should be taught in tandem with the principles of design.

Just an appreciation post for my compassionate, resilient, beautiful wife, Liz. When every day is full of bad news, she reminds me that good things are on the way. Just gotta keep fighting. 💜
Ashi Franke-Loftus kisses her wife, Liz Loftus, on the cheek while sitting on a sunny patio at Moody Brews. Liz has big brown eyes and long red-violet hair, and she’s wearing a purple and white flannel. Ashi has long brown hair with pink streaks and bangs, styled in a bun; and she's wearing a yellow striped dress and black heart-shaped sunglasses.

Ashi’s kitten, Moon Pie, lays on a brightly lit window sill behind white curtains. It is a cloudy day, and he’s looking up at the camera with wide, curious eyes. He is 8 months old, has mackerel tabby markings on his face, amber-colored eyes, and a fluffy coat with white, reddish-brown, and black stripes.Moon Pie lying on the window sill and looking up at the sky. He has a calm but curious expression on his face. Moon Pie glancing downward while lying on the window sill. From this angle, it’s easier to see the distinct mackerel tabby markings on his face: a large “M” shape on his forehead, a dot on either side of his nose, and stripes extending from his eyes and cheeks.
