Online now: Genomic metrics should inform formal conservation threat assessments
dlvr.it
Genomic metrics should inform formal conservation threat assessments
Whole-genome resequencing data, associated metrics, and their trends over time can be used to inform extinction threat rankings rendered by conservation agencies around the world. Surveys of individual genome sequences can critically address risks to population sustainability by means of key metrics such as heterozygosity. Genomic metrics have yet-unrealized potential to help authorities determine how a given population or species of conservation concern should be formally categorized (e.g., ‘listed’ or ‘delisted’) with respect to discrete threat categories. To stimulate productive discourse, we provide a general heuristic framework for how genomic metrics could be used to refine conservation threat assessments (e.g., to help determine whether species should be listed or not).

#Bugsky 🐙🌿 Shared with me by a fof in SoCal - this is a gynandromorph (both male & female) valley carpenter bee (Xylocopa sonorina). Females are black, males orange, so the extreme color dimorphism really stands out. Per Doug Yanega at UC Riverside, bee gynandromorphs he’s seen are mosaic instead—
A photo looking down on an unusual bee clinging to a green shirt. The bee is a stout bee called a carpenter bee, but what’s unusual is that it is both male and female, known as a gynandromorph. In this particular species (Xylocopa sonorina), females are jet black and males are fuzzy orange. This one has an abdomen that is divided into four perfect quadrants, like a checkerboard, alternating orange and black. The thorax is mostly black but with some orange.

A Monday morning giggle. Psst...the countdown is on. 5 days until Dawn Chorus Day. Comic: Jimmy Craig
This comic features four panels. In the first panel, a large bird sits on a branch, saying "spring is upon us." In the second panel, the bird, facing the viewer with a serious look, declares "we must let everyone know." The third panel reveals several small birds on a branch below, listening intently, as one of the little birds says, "but they're all asleep." The fourth panel shows the large bird's face up close, with its eyes narrowed determinedly, stating "then wake them." The artwork is simple with soft colours, and humorously refers to the loud dawn chorus heard during springtime
