got hurt by my church friends tonight

They said how politics in America used to be so different, and that they were learning about Obama in history class and they watched a clip of him debating Romney it was like a different world

And I was like, what do you mean history class

This is a lot of words to say "maybe there's some subgroup with an unusual experience that accounts for the vibecession." Unfortunately, the vibecession is a macro trend that crosses the entire population, and should show up in aggregate measures of people's economic experiences. It doesn't.

“Voters are just being extremely rational and literal about answering this one particular poll question, and they all happen to agree with me on Trump’s policies” is wishful thinking, I’m afraid.

It wouldn’t be surprising if his inflation polling was worse than the numbers alone would predict, but WORSE THAN CARTER?? Inflation was 15%!! At some point you’re just describing a break from reality. bsky.app/profile/bart...

This is insane. Inflation is under 4%. We’ve genuinely created a monster here: a public that hallucinates intolerable inflation no matter what the actual figures are. It is a bullet to the head of the entire progressive project *and progressives can’t even be made to care.*

If the population believes something that is objectively and empirically false, are you and I obliged to pretend it’s true in order to demonstrate solidarity with the masses? For instance, if people believe in false crime surges, do we need to dignify that? Can we say it’s wrong?

This is literally the cheat code for cutting through all the bullshit in this era — “Be specific, what exactly are you referring to” “Schools in CA are helping kids transition and hiding from their parents! Wow, I don’t believe that happens - which specific school did that?” Etc etc.

The groupthink dynamics are worse here than almost anywhere (yes, even much worse than Twitter) because the site is such a monoculture. Once you arrive at the set of opinions that the entire community agrees is correct, you will never be challenged and are encouraged to stop thinking any further.

Honestly you'd think a community formed by people who fled Twitter would be more concerned about the wild spread of conspiratorial thinking and insular self-validation, but I guess the issue with Nazi Twitter was simply that it was spreading the WRONG conspiracies and validating the WRONG ideas

Cory Doctorow has no idea what's in the training data for any commercial LLM, but it's something close to "every written word in the English language that has ever been digitized." Models do not ape their training data, that's not how it works. It's a misunderstanding of every relevant concept.

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man." A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life. Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.

Now I know an ITALIAN is not trying to claim they have a more established nation— www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAmeri...

Do Americans form a distinct people, or are they mainly citizens of a shared state?
HISTORY
I live in Italy, and despite our regional differences, we're a fairly homogeneous and well-defined nation, with our own language, customs, and shared history tied to the peninsula.
The US, however, is so recent and so diverse that I often struggle to comprehend exactly what "the American people" are beyond citizens of the same sovereign state and people with a specific accent.
Americans can have very different origins, religions, languages, identities and looks and as a European, i struggle to see how that level of diversity makes a nation, in the sense of a people, not just a sovereign state. What am I missing?

We can’t clean up Washington without restoring integrity to the Supreme Court. That’s why I believe we should expand the Supreme Court to 13 justices. And then, institute term limits. Because an appointment to the Supreme Court shouldn’t mean a lifetime lack of accountability.

People don’t really understand the nature of the problem. It’s not lots of little random ankle-biter tweets. That’s annoying but whatever. It’s when hating you becomes this communal pursuit that exists separately from yourself. Like there’s an entire group of people working together to target you.

Denaturalization as criminal punishment is not a thing in American law, it's unconstitutional under any circumstances. It can only be done in the narrow case of somebody who fraudulently obtained the naturalization itself. Otherwise they are no different from natural-born citizens who commit crimes.
