#Boktober 05 Headshot this time, ref courtesy of @arula219.bsky.social! I almost didn't do one tonight tbh. Feeling pretty tired today but yay, I finished a sketch page with this one! #birds #chickens

A watercolor and ink sketch of a chicken portrait looking left with pale orange background splotches. The chicken is mostly dark black with rusty feathers on its chest, it has red wattles. Written in ink is the hashtag Boktober and kamakru.com

make now, critique later. or, figure out if the critique and detail management is part of the art-making for you. whichever it might be, not even that is imperative to figure out before you are 'a real artist' or 'making art'.

Some studies from the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson! Third one is a made up landscape, I was trying to apply some techniques/got inspired by Carl Rungius

Black and white art study from Thomas Hill’s Two Stags Battling. Forgoing the two stags though, I focused on the dense forest of trees with a brightly lit beam of sunlight down the center, horizontally

Black and white art study of Albert Bierstadt’s Elk Grazing in the Wind River Country, forgoing the elk in favor of focusing on the valley of grass and snowy peaks in the back. A line of trees is in the mid ground to the left

A black and white sketch of a made up landscape, a valley surrounded by steep snowy peaks and pine trees. A hill in front curves down into the bottom of the valley, where a river lazy winds

NEW PERSONAL WORK I had a dream I was drawing thumbnails, and - in the dream - sketched this out and titled it "The Dreamer". That was striking enough that I woke up, sketched out the thumbnail in real life, and then sat on it for like eight years. Until now!

Here's a rendering technique I've been toying with over the last couple of months in Unreal. It will be used in the upcoming game "Valley of the Lost Abbey" by @rucach.bsky.social The effect is calculated at runtime with the goal of making any scene look more painterly. #UE5 #GameDev #UnrealEngine

A landscape with grass, brushes, trees and sky. There is a modification to the visuals that helps make the image look more painterly.

This second image is also stylized like the first. But it's darker, from within an alcove peering out at the green and lush outside.

if you want to know how important it is for you to do this math: the fees patreon took from me in 2025 add up to roughly 3 months of income. that's 3 months of income i would have paid taxes on if i didn't deduct the fees from the 1099. 3 months of income i never actually had!

Pinterest CEO says in layoff email: "We’re doubling down on an AI-forward approach – prioritizing AI-focused roles, teams, and ways of working" So it's time for me to move to another platform to save images

Linkedin Post from a Pinterest designer reading: "Yesterday I was impacted by the Pinterest layoffs. I was Pinterest's only icon designer and product illustrator.

In his email to the company, the CEO said "we’re doubling down on an AI-forward approach – prioritizing AI-focused roles, teams, and ways of working". I WAS working on AI projects including the Pinterest Assistant that soft-launched in October. If you haven't heard about that feature launch, you can find it on Pinterest's own newsroom or with a Google search.

I was vocal internally about how our users don't want AI slop or features on the platform, how we as employees are feeling uncomfortable and discouraged about AI, and what I wanted from leadership. Last year, I told my manager I was worried about AI-based layoffs. I was told not to worry. At an onsite, we were told that "in the future", we would all be "managers of AIs". That I would be expected to manage some sort of AI employees, rather than craft and design my own work.

Human-made art and design matter. I am never going to stop creating, even if the "home of inspiration" decides that creators are secondary to profits.

If you want to support me, you can follow me on threads or instagram @bonniekatewolf where I post my hand-knit sweaters and oil paintings. If you want to hire a human illustrator, designer, or iconographer, my email and DMs are open for freelance, contract, or FTE roles."
