Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 22hYeah, I’m always very worried since design tools shouldn’t just rely on CSS here (I don’t consider CSS well designed, plus its requirements and medium are very different!), but any time they do something else than CSS it comes, as you hinted at, with consequences. 010
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 22hOh, also there’s this ongoing CSS confusion on whether % is of the item or of the parent. fr avoids that confusion. 110
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 22h1fr seemed like a better text-entry user interface in that when you have many items, you don’t have to re-normalize them to add to 100% every single time you make a change. (Plus, if it exists in grid, people might naturally expect it elsewhere.) 110
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 27/09/2026Oh, interesting! Strange that they went as far as doing this, but still didn’t solve some more rudimentary things I posted. 011
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 26/09/2026My love language is straightening jammed type bars on museum typewriters. 0334
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 25/09/2026Uh, look at this MICR-inspired signage on an old building in Singapore. 2365
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 25/09/2026@nickheer.com Is this a typographical joke with a certain “mark,” or am I reading too much into it 020
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 23/09/2026Gorton in Singapore confirmed (although not very popular). That S in the last photo is something else altogether. 1220
Reposted by Marcin WicharyBen Zotto @bzotto.bsky.social · 20/09/2026This is so fun, I spent a long time looking at your library here. Your commentary on it made me think of this great little quotable 1143
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 20/09/2026Yeah, for sure! Also there are books for reference you don’t *read* but that are useful. 030
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 20/09/2026Thanks! I wanted to lean into the physicality of the space. I even swapped longer plants for the photo – the equivalent of the classic “bumping the lamp,” I suppose. 010
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 20/09/2026One technique I was surprised worked was that on mobile, if you zoom in, I scale the card in the opposite direction so it always has a constant size on the screen. (This would be a lot easier/cleaner in a native app, but I couldn’t think of another way to achieve it in HTML/JS.) 280

Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 19/09/2026It’s been like this for years for me. It is not related to the recent view count change. 020
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 19/09/2026I just reproduced it on iOS. I tapped on this unwatched video and closed it after a second or two. Now it’s marked as completely watched. 100
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 19/09/2026If I play a YouTube video for 3 seconds and leave, it becomes marked as completely watched, with the red line extending all the way under the thumbnail. It’s been like this forever. Does anyone know if this is a bug, or intentional? It’s frustrating to me. 560
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 18/09/2026This feels so fake I honestly thought this was a paper cutout for a second. 150
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 18/09/2026They’re elsewhere in the typography section – they feel more type/graphic design than UX design to me. 020
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 18/09/2026In the second part that just went out, I focused on the Mac, and bought all the white keyboards and took precise photos of them, which was *totally* not necessary: unsung.aresluna.org/key-symbols-... 2121
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 18/09/2026I wrote recently about some keyboard symbols that were lost to time! The first part has the PC side, and the absolutely beautiful, proofreading-inspired symbols for Insert, Delete, and other things: unsung.aresluna.org/key-symbols-... 3537
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 18/09/2026I made a little minisite that shows all of the (UX/product) design books I collected over the years – maybe this will be useful as a reference, or just fun to browse around? I tried to build an enjoyable UI for it, both on desktop and mobile. aresluna.org/my-design-bo... 4304

(All are welcome, though.) All you need to do is check your voter registration: midterms.voteamerica.org/vote/verify/ If you're not registered, do it: midterms.voteamerica.org/vote/ 8233125
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 16/09/2026This is great (and a bit sad seeing how complex this stuff is in CSS). 120

Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 15/09/2026That’s interesting! I do find myself using it exclusively on my non-dominant hand a lot, with only the thumb. 100
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 15/09/2026What seems missing from the iPhone Duo left-handedness discourse is that I imagine quite a few right-handed people hold their phones in the left hand, so it’s not just about left-handed people. (I know I often do!) 3100
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 15/09/2026I wonder sometimes if it’s become a sort of self-perpetuating meme. 010
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 15/09/2026You can’t even type a shortcut for compose and start typing immediately, because there’s a little delay in between where your keystrokes get interpreted as you say. Bad stuff. 010
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 15/09/2026Yeah, that I agree with. Those were interesting for the time but did not age super well, and you are right that no-modifier-key shortcuts should come with more attention to detail around focus states, which Gmail doesn’t have. 100
Marcin Wichary @aresluna.org · 15/09/2026Got it. Space works too, but to me this doesn’t have the gravity of the other examples. Also, Gmail is not really inventing anything new here, just perhaps could fine-tune the existing system conventions it’s using. (And allow Tab to indent at least bullet points!) 110
