Peter A. Beachy house, Oak Park, Illinois. 1906, Frank Lloyd Wright, architect
Peter A. Beachy house, Oak Park, Illinois. "In 1906, Emma Beachy, the daughter of Peter Fahrney, a successful doctor and real-estate investor in Chicago, commissioned Wright to renovate a Gothic cottage on Forest Avenue for her children and second husband, Peter A. Beachy. Wright’s renovations were dramatic, and left little more than the foundation of the original structure intact. The resulting house is situated on the northern corner of its large lot, a strategy that maximizes the exposure to natural light. The house features gabled roofs and is finished in red brick on its first story and [yellow] stucco with dark wood trim on its upper level. In contrast to many of Wright’s Prairie houses, which featured casement windows with abstracted panels of clear and colored glass framed in zinc and copper caming, the casement windows of the Beachy house were designed with heavy wood mullions." Trade catalog cover, phonographs Pathé Frères Paris 1931 Image: Catalogs Collection via @archive.org; archive.org/details/Path...
An olive-green cover featuring a variety of text styles in blue. The upper section contains the lowercase phrase "les meilleures machines parlantes” stacked in delicate lettering, with “l” and “h” characters joined in a straight vertical line running off the top of the cover. In the center, the large name "PATHÉ" in large block letters has "OLOTONAL et DIAMOND" running through the middle. The bottom section lists the address "PATHÉ, 79, AVENUE DE LA GRANDE ARMÉE, PARIS." An elegant monogram-style “1931” with gracefully swooping and overlapping numerals sits in the top right corner.

I used a lot more acrylic inks on this one, letting the inks pour and run across the paper and then painting over the top of them once they dried. I really like the effect! "All That Will Grow" Watercolor, acrylic ink, gouache, and color pencils.
A watercolor painting of two women embracing, surrounded by star thistles. One woman has star thistle spines protruding from her body and pressing against the skin of the other woman attempting to hold her close.

Cover, trade catalog Fenestra Hangar Doors and Windows Detroit Steel Products Co. Detroit, Michigan 1929 Image: Association for Preservation Technology via @archive.org; archive.org/details/Fene...
An architectural illustration of what looks like a lovely day. The artwork features a bird's-eye view of a large airfield facility with multiple orange-roofed hangars. An airplane flies low across the scene. People walk around the tarmac. A couple of planes are parked in the hangars. The company name is written across the front of the hangar structures, and the catalog title is displayed in a stylized circle on the asphalt at the bottom right. A small village is seen beyond the airfield, with rolling hills receding into the background. There appears to be no artist’s signature, and catalog does not credit the illustrator.

Wanderstop is out on Switch/S2 today. It is about burnout, self-care, ambition, caring for others, and is such a cathartic experience that it was my GOTY for 2025. It's so well-written, well-paced, hits hard, and has a fantastic soundtrack that I still listen to. www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4po...

Gotcha
3 panel comic strip rendered in an old fashioned crosshatch style: In front of a crowd, a somber clown is imprisoned in a guillotine as the executioner asks: "Gotcha the Clown... have you any final words?" The clown responds, "Just one..." The body behind the guillotine crumples as a very tiny clown exits the head-hole. "Gotcha!" he exclaims. The crowd applaud and wave their hats. Even the executioner has to suppress a smile.

I have collected a bunch of ex-libris (or bookplates), let me show you some of them. They flourish in the 15th century with the rise of the printing press, to mark ownership of books. Here's one of my fav, you can see that early on they are really personal objects, sometime mysterious or funny.
Bookplate of Hans Igler (Johannes Knabensperg), a hedgehog walking to the left, with a flowering plant in its mouth; a scroll above printed with Gothic lettering 'hanns Igler das dich ein igel ku[e]s'. Woodcut 1470-1480 (circa)

Remember, when someone on tv does something you don’t like, it’s important to find them online and tell them off. It’s not rude, because you watch their show and that means you’re basically their client and boss.

In January 2001, in the OPM2 letters page, Kenneth from Denmark saw the future.
HARD DISK WORRIES

My only fear about PlayStation 2 is concerning the forthcoming Hard Disk Drive. How can gamers be sure that this won't tempt some developers to send out 'unfinished' games as they did with the PC? I hope that you can somehow convince me that this won't be the case.

Trade catalog cover Hart & Cooley Manufacturing Co. Holland, Michigan 1938 Image: Avery Library Architectural Trade Catalogs Collection (Columbia Univ.) via @archive.org; archive.org/details/airc...
Vertically oriented cover in a sort of sepia tone. Four same-sized rectangular metal grilles with different patterns are arranged in a diagonal row running vertically. They are lit from above, casting dramatic shadows. In a spotlight upper right, 3D-looking block lettering in white, also casting shadows: AIR CONDITIONING GRILLES OF DISTINCTION

From the catalog: “The technical distinction between a grille and a register is that a grille has no provision for controlling the volume of air, whereas a register has a valve for this purpose. For the sake of simplicity, the term ’grille’ will be used throughout this brochure.”

Hello, former Studebaker salesroom with the glorious terra cotta! I will not complain about the masonry infill because we still get to look at this lovely terra cotta relic. Architect: AL Levy, 1924
Color photo of a white terra cotta clad building with a flat roof and a lovely, polychrome terra cotta Studebaker wagon wheel logo. To the left can be seen a small strip of the building's original brown brick. To the right, where there used to be a large expanse of plate glass windows, is now a wall of non-matching red brick infill punctuated by three small glass block windows.Color detail of the Studebaker logo taken at an angle from directly below. Rendered in polychrome terra cotta, the logo -- a light brown wagon wheel with a black diagonal banner that reads Studebaker -- sits in an arch above the entrance, surrounded by elaborate white terra cotta floral designs.Color photo of a building's slightly stepped roofline and the expanse of white terra cotta beneath it, along with a glimpse at the disintegrating brick infill.Color photo of the entire entrance bay to the building. This view highlights the disparate materials that make up the facade. To the left of the entrance is brown brick, but to the right can be seen part of the red brick infill used to enclose what used to be large plate glass windows. The entrance bay is centered between these two elements, and is a lovely white terra cotta, with a door surround topped by a pediment decorated with a centered shield and dense foliate designs. Directly above this is a large and hideous vent, but above this another expanse of lovely white terra cotta with the Studebaker logo -- a light brown wagon wheel with a diagonal banner that reads Studebaker in script -- set into the tympanum of an arch stuffed with floral designs.
