the funny thing about this of course is that "athenian democracy" was a cautionary tale to the framers, who saw it as unstable and prone to demagogues and tyrants like the one rubio works for

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

The Blacktongue Thief + prequel, what moves the dead + sequel (if you don’t mind body horror), CSE Cooney writes very charming queer fantasy, voyage of the damned is fun, the bloodsworn series by John Gwynne (this came close to scratching the rote itch), and Malka Older’s Mossa and Pleiti!!

Ok sorry just got home to my books: If you liked Carmilla you might like A Dowry of Blood. Not explicitly queer but dark fantasy, I like The Wolf and the Woodsman and Naomi Novik’s fairytale retellings. Grace Draven is also solid dark fantasy. And if you like sci fi, A memory called empire + sequel!

The Lies of Locke Lamora and sequels also scratch a similar itch, in terms of incredible world building and devastating emotional ruin, but isn’t very queer

Ok as a fellow RotE fan, some of the epic fantasy that is queer that gives me some similar vibes (although nothing will scratch that itch again…) is: Priory of the Orange Tree, The Jasmine Throne and sequel, and if you haven’t read Tamora Pierce she’s excellent

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

Night at the Museum 🏛️🌌🏺👻
Art by flaroh illustration. Septembers illustration is a nighttime scene in the House of the Faun room at the National Archaeology Museum in Naples. The eponymous faun/satyr figurine is in the foreground, and is observed by a ghostly Roman lady with an impressive Flavian hairpiece. She looks mournful as she passes through the room of her former possessions, her gaze lingering on the bronze statuette. Behind her, the mosaics displayed on the wall are visible through her translucent body.

The palette is a vibrant mix of blues contrasted with bright orange line art
