Yesterday, a distinctly autumnal feel at Shepreth #Cambridgeshire, both air & River Shep, tributary of beleaguered River Cam, were the classic #chalkstream temperature of 10.5°C. Visibility a bit murky, maybe due to the rain, but also evidence of Signal Crayfish diggings said to cause murk.

This is how we should see these magnificant animals, not hauled up on a boat or in fillets on a slab. We should no more catch or kill this rare and stunning megafauna than we should trap or kill tigers or whales. Here are some more of Rupert’s photos from yesterday, with his kind permission.

Unlike other #Devon #ctenophores we saw the Northern Comb Jelly (Beroe cucumis) lacks tentacles, instead engulfing other ctenophores with huge mouth. These ancient marine #invertebrates are largest animals to swim with cilia.

After commercial whaling nearly erased them, blue and fin whales are slowly reclaiming the southeast Atlantic
More than 40 years after the end of commercial whaling, new research reveals a recent increase in sightings of the world's two largest whale species in the southeastern Atlantic. The findings, published in the African Journal of Marine Science, compiled more than 60 years of confirmed sightings and strandings from Namibia and South Africa's west coast. Although overall numbers remain low, sightings of both species have increased markedly in recent years—with 95% of observations recorded since 2012.
