(1) Carbon store: peatlands cover 3% of global land area but store 33% of global soil carbon.
(2) Peat fires cause 5% of global emissions: roughly 2 billion tonnes of CO2 every year.
(3) Peat swamp forests are 90% water. When drained for plantations, the land becomes dangerously flammable during dry seasons.
(4) Fires smolder invisibly, deep underground. Unlike surface fires, peat fires are difficult to detect and extremely hard to extinguish.
(5) Haze is the new “normal” season. Annual smoke-filled skies have become a routine part of life for younger generations.
(6) Toxic smoke impacts millions of lives. Haze triggers respiratory problems and disrupts health, education and travel across Southeast Asia.

The infographic has images of different fish, crabs, oysters, scallops; faraway, nearby, and in the Marine Protected Area. The text says:

Marine protection in Jersey benefits fisheries.
More scallops, more catches for fishers.

6.5% of the Islands waters were covered when Jersey's MPAs were designated in 2017. (This will increase to 21.7% in September 2026.)

Before settling, baby king scallops are thought to travel/spread 50km on average.
Habitats have more structural complexity, supporting larger numbers of juvenile fish and shellfish.
Fishermen benefit. Spillover. Populations recover.
56 sq km of maerl beds.
72% more scallops inside MPA compared to outside.

3000+ species can be found in Jersey's waters:
25% more species in MPAs compared to outside.
160 sq km of protected seabed from bottom-trawling has driven all this recovery.

When mating, the two seahorse tails will be intertwined and the colour will change to attract each other. Like a ballet dancer, the male seahorse slowly rotates in the water towards the female seahorse, sometimes rolling its tail, and sometimes letting it stand upright; a ‘love dance’ can last for hours.” The painting shows the happy couple in four stages of the dance.
