@numenini.bsky.social This vegetation clearance sounds hugely destructive to river life: who's doing it, and why?

This stooped remnant rhizome of Yellow Water-Lily (Nuphar lutea) - survivor of the recent vegetation clearance of South Drain, Shapwick Moor, Somerset Levels - seems to epitomise the carnage. Clearly, this was the dominant macrophyte, survivors giving hope of river restoration. #Wildflowerhour 7/14

Under oak over South Drain, Shapwick Moor, a healthy population of Swan Mussel (Anodonta cygnea) - never seen them with such distended siphons - Sludge Worms (Tubifex tubifex) dancing about them. Elsewhere, where machinery had free rein, stripped silt scattered with the shells of dead ones. 5/14

The kelp scallop, as its name suggests, attaches to kelp with byssal threads. It can see, and if threatened by a potential predator, can detach itself to swim away, clapping its valves to generate jet propulsion! #clamFacts www.inaturalist.org/observations/63…

Many bivalves and other mollusks have a planktonic veliger stage, when they possess a wing-like organ called a velum, which I like to imagine making little helicopter noises. The velum is covered by cilia which beat from a few to hundreds of times per second, channeling food towards them and […]

This is how we should see these magnificant animals, not hauled up on a boat or in fillets on a slab. We should no more catch or kill this rare and stunning megafauna than we should trap or kill tigers or whales. Here are some more of Rupert’s photos from yesterday, with his kind permission.
