When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

The Internet moves in predictable ways... After seeing that notification, I went to Wikipedia to check the Kelvin Wave page, and literally the most recent edit (earlier today) was someone flagging that article might be too technical for the average reader (it's a lot of equations)

I've talked to a few journal editors who are concerned about similar problems re: anonymous reviewers. If a peer reviewer wants a little help & feeds your unpublished submission into an AI system, they've just shared your proprietary work & broken confidentiality. A nightmare to think about

I am a strong believer in freedom of religion. However, I also strongly feel that your freedom of religion ends at forcing your religion on other people. This includes parents forcing religion on their children. I beg society to treat children as individual people and not property of their parents.

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]
JPEG version of a 1-page Factsheet: El Niño 2026-2027: A Potentially Historic Global Climate Event
By Daniel Swain, PhD | August 2026

There is a banner image depicting projected warming of the Pacific Ocean by early winter.

The content begins:
"What is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural cycle, known as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that occurs roughly every 2-7 years in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Niño events, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warms to well above typical levels. El Niño directly affects local climate in the countries closest to the unusually warm ocean waters, but can also indirectly influence the climate of distant regions thousands of miles away. During the strongest events, El Niño can profoundly affect climate even on global scales, causing temporary planetary warming and disrupting large-scale precipitation patterns..."

For the first time, a peer-reviewed study has "drawn a straight line from single corporate emitters like Exxon or Chevron ... to specific heatwaves and areas of extreme rainfall." The new methodological framework could make it much easier to hold Big Oil accountable for its climate lies.

It just got way easier to sue fossil fuel companies over climate change
For years, industry has argued you can't prove which company caused which disaster. A new study says otherwise.

Lastly, also worth noting that there *are* more optimistic climate models out there (I know the model from my PhD group is one) but even those do require humanity to still make a big effort to stay beneath 2C by reducing emissions, which instead have still been growing over the past 5yrs

case if "officially cancelled" just yet, especially with a potentially destabilizing world thanks to my home country's antics. Also worth noting that 2.6C is still *not good*! We have a lot of effort to do to stay beneath 2C, even more to aim of 1.5C (which we're already hitting annually).

which I'm not sure about. "Worst case scenario", to me, means current policies get abandoned and countries start leaning into fossil fuels harder, and that's clearly worse than current policies. I do think that the past 10yrs of policy have reduced what the worst case could be, but IDK if the worst

I missed the news months ago but this is making the rounds again so I think worth sharing that the best estimate of warming by 2100 is roughly 2.6C based on current policies alone The Vox article in question (which I can't read, paywall) claims in the headline that the "worst case is cancelled",
A graph showing historical and projected global GHG emissions out to 2100, with each projection labelled on the right with the expected global average temperature (vs preindustrial) associated with each projection. Current GHG policies look to 2.5-2.9C warming, pledges lead to 2.2C, and even an optimistic scenario still has 1.9C warming. The 1.5C-compatible GHG projection requires negative emission by 2080, and drops precipitously from 2020 historical levels, with historical emissions since 2020 rising instead of following the sharp drop.

With Spain beating France, I've jumped from 10th to 3rd in my bracket pool. Thankfully, from my read of the rest of the pool, I think I can no longer drop positions even if Argentina lose their semifinal. I move into second if Argentina make the final, and I win if Argentina wins. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
