I missed the news months ago but this is making the rounds again so I think worth sharing that the best estimate of warming by 2100 is roughly 2.6C based on current policies alone The Vox article in question (which I can't read, paywall) claims in the headline that the "worst case is cancelled",

Current GHG policies look to 2.5-2.9C warming, pledges lead to 2.2C, and even an optimistic scenario still has 1.9C warming. The 1.5C-compatible GHG projection requires negative emission by 2080, and drops precipitously from 2020 historical levels, with historical emissions since 2020 rising instead of following the sharp drop.

With Spain beating France, I've jumped from 10th to 3rd in my bracket pool. Thankfully, from my read of the rest of the pool, I think I can no longer drop positions even if Argentina lose their semifinal. In a capitalist hellscape, the best way to vote is with your $ Gonna miss a fair number of shows, but I go through them so slowly anyway, not a huge loss. I finished one of my faves today, so now that's that. Time to make the cut. Honestly the TV App's UI was really slow and unresponsive anyway!

So all the right elements are currently in place at Bluesky to usher in this new architecture for social media: independent ownership, newfound popularity, a stark contrast with other dominant platforms, and right-minded leadership. But challenges remain, and we can’t count on Bluesky to do this right without support.

Critics have pointed out that Bluesky has yet to turn a profit and is currently running on venture capital, the same corporate structure that brought us Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies. As of now, there’s no option to exit Bluesky and take your data and network with you, because there are no other servers that run the AT Protocol. Bluesky CEO Jay Graber deserves credit for her stewardship so far, and for attempting to avoid the dangers of advertising incentives. But the process by which capitalism degrades tech products is so predictable that Cory Doctorow coined a now-popular term for it: enshittification.
