But I thought that intersex people had "both parts" down there? Nope! Many intersex variations don't even affect genitalia, and while some intersex variations have ambiguous genitalia, none give a fully formed, functional penis and vagina. That is a fictional porn trope - Huh? But why did I see it in porn, then? Yea about that... Porn of fantasy or transfem bodies is mistakingly labeled and tagged as intersex. Right now, in our online subculture, most people's knowledge of intersex comes from unrealistic porn that perpetuates misinformation and fetishization of real intersex bodies. Please do not tag porn of transfem or dualsex bodies as intersex unless they have a specific intersex variation - What about words like "hermaphrodite" or "futanari" - Under no circumstance is it ever appropriate to call intersex (or perisex transfems) these words. They are derogatory and dehumanizing slurs (- another drawing of the puppy)

What is intersex? Intersex is an umbrella term for a community of people that have sex characteristics that differ from the typical male or female, and can refer to differences in reproductive organs, hormones, chromosomes, or other sex characteristics. These differences are present at birth, but may not be visible right away. Some become apparent during puberty, while some never become outwardly visible. Someone can be intersex and may not even know until they're an adult. Since there is a wide variety of intersex bodies and experiences, it is important to listen to intersex people themselves describe their experiences (- drawings of three dogs in intersex colours, each with mixed sexual features)

What is the difference between DSD and intersex? Differences/Disorders of sex development (DSD) is the medical term for intersex people. Many intersex people, including myself, do not like DSD as a term as we don't consider our bodies disordered and find that language pathologizes us. The idea that intersex variations are disorders leads to real harm done to us. (a drawing of an intersex puppy pointing to the text "Just say intersex!") What harm is done to intersex people? The biggest issue that intersex people face is through systemic medical abuse. As infants, intersex people face noncensual and medically unnecessary surgeries to make our bodies appear more male or female. In fact, in many cases these surgeries actually lead to life-long health issues like sterilization, chronic pain, loss of sexual sensation, and trauma. We are mutilated as babies, causing us to have life-long pain and trauma, and then lied to about it by our parents, all because our bodies are a little different (- a drawing of a crying puppy that appears to be bleeding but the blood is yellow, the same colour as his skin)
