Can large coastal landslides act as proxies for v strong shaking events along the Hikurangi subduction zone? I.e. can paleo-landslides instruct us about past earthquakes? Well, we're looking at this along the Wairarapa coast, NZ #eqnz

We drilled a very large landslide (10^6 m^3) in the Wairarapa last month to locate the slide plane. Probably c 20 m down. Geomorphically the Hapua LS is Really weird. At 2.5 km from the Carterton Fault, we think it has reactivated several times during the Holocene

Nearly 200 aftershocks (M2.5-5.8) within 30 hours of yesterday’s M7 earthquake in Yukon. Had this occurred in a densely populated region, all/most of these aftershocks would have been felt, with some large enough to cause additional damage. A lot will be learned from this earthquake sequence. ⚒️🧪
A USGS map of aftershocks (first ~30 hours) show nearly 200 located, some as large as M5.8 Coloured dots indicate the age of the events. These extend in a NW-SE direction along a 50-km-long fault.
