I am not on here very much right now and also currently out of the country. But there was a solidarity action in the city I'm visiting today, which I wanted to share. Probably 200 or so people.

once again thinking about this passage from David Lynch's book Catching the Big Fish

excerpt reads: "I hear stories about directors who scream at actors, or they trick them somehow to get a performance. And there are some people who try to run the whole business on fear. But I think this is such a joke -- it's pathetic and stupid at the same time.
When people are in fear, they don't want to go to work. So many people today have that feeling. Then the fear starts turning into hate, and they begin to hate going to work. Then the hate can turn into anger and people can become angry at their boss and their work.
If I ran my set with fear, I would get 1 percent, not 100 percent, of what I get. And there would be no fun in going down the road together. And it *should* be fun. I, for one, appreciate that the crossword outlet @avcx.bsky.social has a better Trump-specific editorial policy than most mainstream news outlets.

In early 2017, AVCX announced a new, official editorial policy, namely that we as a feature would regard Donald Trump as an asshole when we referred to him in print. That, however, was eight years ago, and the matter seems worth revisiting now. Indeed, given the breadth of the coalition that voted for him - about one in five Americans! - many media outlets have approached Trump's second term differently from his first, leaving the defiance of the #resistance behind in favor of capitulation in advance, acceptance, appeasement, or even outright embrace. AVCX is a media company, too. We have asked ourselves how we should respond this time, as the world is now assuredly different.

So our revised editorial policy as of 2025 is that Donald Trump, his administration, and his allies can kiss our ass. No matter what powers they may possess or claim to possess, or which threats they may issue, they can just kiss our entire, collective ass. Every organization has an ass, a metonym for a shared, core center of identity, where the vulnerability of one is the vulnerability of all. Our ass is in part queer, nonwhite, expansively gendered, non-Christian, disabled, and many other modes of selfhood that Donald Trump has routinely mocked or abused. So, for the next four years and beyond, we will continue to treat him and his enablers in our puzzles as the inhumane assholes they have repeatedly proven themselves to be, factually, but we now add this important and timely addendum to provide clarity for our solvers.

This response from @sbearbergman.bsky.social to @hildur.bsky.social’s post has changed my week— it is so wholesome, and human, and so the energy we all need right now. And Kerstin Langenberger, the naturalist who posted “I am on my way with the necessary equipment”? This woman is the hero we need.

My feed today on BlueSky included a post from Icelandic writer Hildur Knútsdóttir, who saw the original exchange on a Reykjavik Facebook page - someone posted to say that it appeared a cygnet was frozen to the ice and dying. As people worried online about how or whether it would be possible to help, naturalist Kerstin Langerberger replied to the post, saying: “I am on my way with the necessary equipment.” Langenberger brought a friend, some thermoses of warm water, and a surfboard in case the ice failed - the necessary equipment - and thawed then freed the baby swan, which promptly flew off.

There are a number of things I appreciate about this story, but it’s Langenberger’s statement that resonates for me. That is what I aspire to, to see injury or difficulty or something gone to trouble and decide: I am on my way with the necessary equipment. But also, to hold on to the understanding that sometimes the necessary equipment is the resolve to try and a friend who will help, and that sometimes I *am* the necessary equipment - the friend who shows up to make myself useful under the direction of an expert.

There are a lot of moments these days that I find it very, very hard to do the next thing, or indeed to do anything. The world is so, so difficult. I often feel useless or overwhelmed or exhausted or just really fucking sad. But I am going to try starting the days by saying, with all the starch that I imagine a naturalist willing to chance the ice in darkness to save a baby bird might possess:

I am on my way with the necessary equipment.
