At last count the full price tag is now around $3.5 billion -- very roughly, that's $500 million for the currently underway Phase 1A and planned Phase 1B, plus $1 billion for Phase 1C and $2 billion for Phase 2. Current funding will only cover 1A and 1B, and the freeway cover is all in 1C and 2.

Of course people keep failing to check AI output for mistakes! For all of existence until a few years ago, if something talked to you like a person you could safely assume it was thinking like a person, and people don't make those kinds of mistakes. No one was prepared to suddenly lose that crutch.

Anthony Macuk @anthonymacuk.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
This is the whole problem with AI right here. We're all hardwired to anthropomorphize rocks yet we invented computers that talk like us without fully thinking like us and somehow expected every user to immediately grasp that distinction and the limits it places on the talking computer's abilities.

Anthony Macuk @anthonymacuk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
This is also where I kind of roll my eyes at the idea that AI could "solve" climate change. There's this unstated assumption that a sufficiently powerful intelligence will be able to simply exempt itself from the laws of physics.

The problem with the AI-kills-us-all-in-10-years scenario is if we die, the power grid dies. Maybe in some hypothetical future we'll have fleets of servitor robots that the AI could hijack to keep physically shoveling coal into the plants, but for now it's basically our dead man switch.
