Raimore Construction will exit the I-5 Rose Quarter project early next year, citing its "business needs as the project's schedule, funding and anticipated construction opportunities have evolved." www.kgw.com/article/news...

Did the on-train system maps always display the downtown couplets as single lines? I feel like that's a change but without being able to see the old version I'm not sure.

Tired: drunk driving may kill a lot of people, but it also helps a lot of people get to work on time, so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not. Wired: Killing people while driving drunk isn't even homicide unless the drunk driving was undertaken for the purpose of killing people.

I think I'm hearing bass from the Bridge City Block Party right now? I am well over a mile away from the waterfront with many, many buildings in between.

It's really incredible how fast it's going; it looks like they've taken down about 25% of the overall building shell and it's not even noon. www.kgw.com/article/news...

In the video from this angle you can pretty clearly see the whole northwest wall of the building swaying — can't say for sure but it looks like the tower hit it on the way down — but it stays standing!

There appear to be multiple watch parties going on the balconies of the Vista condo tower in the Pearl District (directly across Naito Parkway and the train tracks from Centennial Mills).

We don't know the exact demolition time yet, but we're told it'll be this afternoon and there will be a one-hour warning before it happens. We will be streaming it.

The closure zone includes Union Pacific tracks just north of Union Station, which is why Amtrak Cascades is paused. But the city has criticized Union Pacific for continuing to run freight trains through despite concerns that the vibrations could trigger a collapse. www.kgw.com/article/news...

In case you haven't heard, crews are gonna bring down the Centennial Mills rooftop water tower in Portland today, using controlled explosives to sever the support structure and drop the century-old tank eight stories inside the burned-out building. Should be pretty cool. www.kgw.com/article/news...

Not really germane to to the story, but personally very curious about why they said "bravely" here because to me at least it reads as super passive-aggressive for no apparent reason?

Another Naito closure, this time for a grain spill at the south end of downtown. Or at least possibly Naito? Unclear. PF&R says the Naito/Harbor intersection is closed due to debris on road but the photos they posted show the crash around the corner on Harbor. www.kgw.com/article/traf...

The ODF number for today is even higher, and would make this year already the second-worst on record after 2024, at least in terms of total acres burned.

Anthony Macuk @anthonymacuk.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
Total acres burned in Oregon roughly doubled since Friday, and it looks like the total is now higher than it was at this point in 2024, which became the worst year on record.

You could probably build this portion of the viaduct as planned, then turn it north to line up with the missing C Street ramp. After passing over the I-5 SB ramp loop you'd have about 800 feet of horizontal distance to get down to street grade before 7th Street. Hopefully that's enough, I dunno.
110
Anthony Macuk @anthonymacuk.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
But in this scenario the C Street ramps are also unbuilt/unfunded, and without them C Street is pretty empty. So, what if you kept just the southbound C Street lane and sacrificed the center/northbound lanes to become at-grade LRT tracks for three blocks, with a terminus station next to the library?
161
Anthony Macuk @anthonymacuk.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
In this scenario you can't finish the line as planned in the LPA because it's on a viaduct directly above the southbound I-5 collector/distributor, which isn't built yet and is stuck in funding limbo. The Evergreen LRT extension and the freeway rebuild from SR-14 to Mill Plain are a package deal.

Anthony Macuk @anthonymacuk.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
I'm bored, so here's a pointless armchair engineering thread: Hypothetically, if the full IBR "core" phase got built but the rest stalled for lack of funding, and you still wanted to get light rail to Evergreen without having to find funding for everything else... could you just run it up C Street?

If they need a reason for Steve to be back in the present day in Doomsday they can just say he's buying diapers. Taking care of a baby in the 1940s while knowing about Huggies would be unbearable, I guarantee you he would use the time travel gizmo to make at least one trip to like a 2024 Fred Meyer.

I love the Marquam Hill campus architecture, it looks like the product of a series of battles between the design people and the budget people where the design people somehow won every time. This is a Minecraft fortress.
