My Transformers collection went towards a mortgage deposit. Well, the valuable, rare Transformers did. Probably just as well, as some of the ones I sold probably would be a lot of work for me to keep in saleable condition longer term.

Hmm, don’t like doing these things for myself, but SBS and THB would likely be on my list. More certainly the latter album.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?
Screengrab of the BBC1 Six O’Clock News, circa mid 1980s.

Relegated? Driven insolvent and packed off to the bottom of the [insert name of whatever the Vauxhall Conference is called these days], really. At this point I’m not sure that it can be salvaged, short of leaving it alone for at least a half a decade and rebooting the whole thing from scratch.

When ‘it happens’, I don’t think that any of us will not get the news pretty immediately if we still own any functional electronic devices.

I’ve luckily only had two ‘reactions’: Last year’s Covid, when I felt flu-like after 6 hours which lasted until the following evening, and the flu shot in 2021 when I felt mildly delirious for 2 hours and made a expensive impulse purchase. Still better than the alternative!

I’m of the opinion that public service broadcasting is as vital for a country to function as schools, libraries and hospitals and should be funded as such. Unfortunately, the BBC News is in such a dreadful state, that it’s hard to remain supportive of that particular organ of public broadcasting…

Retro Gamer (the fanzine) was unmatched, really. Some of the content and information in the interviews conducted by Keith and the various contributors has never reappeared in more recent publications.

To be fair, I only did one year of Latin at secondary school, but it was very foundational in terms of skills I later used at university (working methodologically, referring back to written material, etc). Transferable skills are real and good, in my experience.

I should probably keep posting this in case anyone's missed it, as it is at least one thing actively reducing stress levels atm. Obvs no obligation, people have been incredibly generous already but I would be letting Flo down if I didn't keep reposting it on her behalf www.gofundme.com/f/flo-and-rob

Yeah, no-one was playing those. Well, unless they had the arcade version of the Neo Geo in their local fish and chips shop, or they were Pablo Escobar. Or both.

Great magazine, Super Play. Arguably Future’s best (and easily their best console publication). Didn’t mind hearing about the import stuff in SPlay; it’s not like you’d be able to play every non-import game reviewed in the magazines anyway. Well, until emulation game along.

We had army recruitment thing at secondary school too. Pre Iraq War II, though. I got yelled at (and possibly worse) for asking to be excused from the presentation as I knew I’d be barred from military service on medical grounds…

Hasn’t helped they’ve alienated a lot of their voters with more austerity, plus being socially conservative and xenophobic isn’t appealing to their ‘modern’ voter bloc (the more ‘traditional’ Labour voters now solidly Tory/Reform).

Head Over Heels! I didn’t even play it to start with, but watched my parents play it, both taking turns, and my mum mapping it on graph paper. I later got the hang of playing it. Pretty epic arcade-adventure with early elements of what we’d now call a Metroidvania. Wonderful pixel art too.
Head Over Heels (1986), the first screen/room.

Screenshot is of the Amstrad CPC version. I actually played the ZX Spectrum 48k version as a child, but the CPC version looks nicer. And is technically the ‘prime’ version of the game.

I mean, the Greens have gained a lot of support despite being hapless amateurs because people want an alternative to the Labour and Tories which doesn’t do the same authoritarian rubbish (or the constant austerity measures); it’s an open goal which the LibDems haven’t bothered to shoot towards.

I’m sick to the back teeth of their current trajectory. They do get a fair bit right, but folding to the Labour government on both the Online Safety Act and the ‘overdiagnosis’ narrative of ND conditions is pretty toxic, even before we get to their newly-announced neoliberal tax-cutting nonsense.

IMO the LibDems leadership are repeating what happened leading up to 2010 and are tilting rightwards fairly quickly. :/ (I see there are numerous LD supporters attacking the policy in the replies there…)

The FDP tried going right-wing populist (well, more explicitly so than their usual selves) in the early ‘00s, and it didn’t do them any favours. I suppose the AfD have stolen a lot of their platform, admittedly with a lot of added racism on top…

Referendums should be banned, to be honest. There’s a reason certain European countries either don’t allow them, or only have them with safeguards (quorums, super-majorities, etc).

(I mean, it’s easy to forget in 2026 how “Reform Lite” David Cameron was, particularly as opposition leader. Other than a few comments about accepting gay people and recognising climate change, his playbook was very, very similar to what Reform come with now.)

Those single-issue voters exist, but the authoritarian, quasi-fascist stuff does appeal to a lot of voters: The anti-foreigner, anti-LGBTQ, anti-disabled people rhetoric. Hence the success of the Tories for generations, who’ve regularly leaned into that sort of unpleasantness.

Anonymous X @anonymousx.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I wouldn’t say “economic left”, but the older sort of far-right parties had a state interventionist, vaguely welfarist streak (well, nativist welfarist) which the 21st century far-right (Reform, AfD, etc) firmly rejects. I assume that most modern far-right voters don’t widely realise that.

I mean, I’ve always thought it makes much more sense to think of Reform and its predecessor UKIP as being a unofficial fusion of the Labour and Tory parties, rather than ‘just’ being extreme Tories.

My proposal: • hard reboot, only keeping core concepts and (for merch reasons) the TARDIS. • rarely travel outside Earth; use certain British historical sites and outdoor museums for location shoots. • no Daleks; they’re boring. • total ban on “end of the universe” stories. • new, modern theme tune.

Had an awkward time in Sainsbury’s the other week as I was asked for an ID when buying a pack of beer, but the staff member couldn’t read the DOB details on my ID due to her poor eyesight. So I was sent away beer-less. Ironically, it was alcohol-free beer. Which they still require an ID for.

(They didn’t explain that in Latin that U, V, W and Y were all written with a “V”, or that I and J were the same letter, etc. Unless that wasn’t knowledge given to year 7 kids.)

Also did Latin. Only just in year 7. I think it was oddly one of the most useful things that I ‘learnt’ in secondary school in terms of preparing me for university, due to the methodical nature of it all, and having a set book to refer to.

Err, it won’t help if certain parties make themselves too toxic for many progressive voters to lend votes to (which Labour is particularly guilty of). Mainstream centre-left parties everywhere still haven’t twigged that apeing the far-right alienates their own voters at the cost of gaining nobody.

TBH, if he was still doing games writing I wouldn’t read it, having seen the ideological crowd he hangs about with. Much as I liked his games writing over the decades. (Had a think, and it’s about 14 years since he had anything in Retro Gamer.)

Sega’s classic arcade game has turned 40, which is all the excuse you need to take the game and its sequels out for a spin. Although some are probably best left in the garage
