You might be wondering why we haven't updated outbreak.info for months. Well, the reason is that GISAID cut our access in January - as they did others. Without telling us. After a ♾️ back and forth, that is now permanent. More on that soon - and why GISAID should not be trusted with critical data.

An easily overlooked consequence of research funding cancellations: completed research these days requires hundreds to several thousand dollars to be published due to publication fees from journals. Without support for these fees many pieces of scientific work will be near invisible.

💯 I've written (or co-written) several grant proposals, including grant proposals to the NIH and NSF. Peer review is *extremely* thorough, and only a fraction of the very best ideas get approved/funded. And there are strict requirements to document how the money is spent.

NSF just cancelled ALL grants to Harvard researchers. That’s right - physics, astronomy, bio, CAREER - ALL. Professors won’t get paid. Postdocs won’t get paid. PhD students won’t get paid. This is insane! If they can do this to Harvard, they can do this to your school.

From @hsph.harvard.edu on Instagram. In FY 25, 46% of the school's budget came from federal grants. Thinking of the many friends I have at Harvard Chan right now who just want to do work that will make the world healthier.

Yesterday afternoon, scientists across Harvard Chan School learned the government had abruptly terminated their research.
Nearly every single one of the school's direct federal grants was terminated.
